While all is quiet on the coaching front in Dallas, two other NFC East teams are making moves to bolster their offensive staffs.
In both Washington, DC and New York City announcements were made detailing the hiring of two young offensive coordinators. While the New York Giants chose to go outside their program in search of a change to bolster an offense that struggled mightily in 2013, the Washington Commanders under new head coach Jay Gruden chose to promote from within. Lets take a look at the two coaches who will be matching wits with the Dallas Cowboys defensive brain-trust during the upcoming season.
The Commanders announced on Tuesday that former tight ends coach Sean McVay, a holdover from the recently ended Mike Shanahan era, would assume the duties of offensive coordinator. In that role he will be replacing Shanahan's son Kyle, who had previously directed the Washington offense. At 27 years of age, the former wide receiver from the University of Miami has six seasons worth of professional coaching experience. Starting his career in 2008 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an offensive assistant, McVay lasted one year in the league before moving to the UFL to become the wide receivers and quality control coach of the Florida Tuskers. At both stops he worked along side the new Commanders head coach. Returning to the NFL in 2010, he became first an offensive assistant and later the tight ends coach on the Shanahan staff. His new role in Washington will be McVay's first shot at being an offensive coordinator.
Moving north to the Big Apple, Giants head coach Tom Coughlin will be replacing the retired Kevin Gilbride with former Green Bay Packers QB coach Ben McAdoo. At 36 years of age, McAdoo brings 13 seasons of collegiate and professional coaching experience to the Giants. In addition to his experience with the Packer QBs, he has at various times during his career coached offensive linemen, tight ends, and special teams. The protogé of Green Bay head coach Mike McCarthy, McAdoo followed his mentor from the New Orleans Saints to the San Francisco 49ers and then to Green Bay. In addition, he has held coaching slots at five different colleges, including Michigan State, Pitt, and Stanford. Like his colleague in the nation's capitol, McAdoo is embarking on his first offensive coordinator position.
While only time will tell how successful each man will be in his new post, it might be safely assumed that each will play a key role in implementing key changes to the offenses that the Dallas Cowboys will have to face. In addition, for coach McAdoo, with Tom Coughlin being at an age where he is nearing retirement, it might be that he is in the position of "auditioning" for a larger position with the Giants in the near future. In any event, each man will provide new challenges for the Boys to face during the 2014 season.
