The Deflate-Gate Scandal has been the topic of discussion all offseason and today it got even nuttier. A court arbitrator has made their ruling, nullifying any punishment against quarterback Tom Brady.
After the Wells Report stated that Tom Brady "more likely than not" lied about his involvement in the deflating of the footballs for the AFC Championship game, Brady was given a four game suspension by Roger Goodell. Of course, none of this sat well with the Patriots or Brady.
What was even more odd is that Goodell named himself judge, jury, and executioner as he has done multiple times in previous disciplinary hearings. Once he and the Patriots met and could not come up with a compromise to put all of this behind them, the circus was then brought to court. The judge of course believed that this was an embarrassing ordeal from the start and finally made the ruling today. So after months of back-and-forth, today saw according to Adam Schefter, Roger Goodell's biggest defeat. In fact, shortly after the ruling, the NFLPA had this to say:
"This decision should prove, once and for all, that our Collective Bargaining Agreement does not grant this Commissioner the authority to be unfair, arbitrary and misleading. While the CBA grants the person who occupies the position of Commissioner the ability to judiciously and fairly exercise the designated power of that position, the union did not agree to attempts to unfairly, illegally exercise that power, contrary to what the NFL has repeatedly and wrongfully claimed."
As far as the Cowboys are concerned, this means the 'dream-match' between former Eastern Illinois quarterbacks will never come to fruition. Kidding of course. So we will in fact get to see how well the Dallas Cowboys match up with the New England Patriots with all parts of the equation present. However, this is not the only way it effects the Cowboys.
According to Todd Archer, Greg Hardy is now 'heavily considering' taking the NFL to court on his four game suspension. As we all know, Hardy's suspension was reduced by the NFL in hopes that he would accept the punishment, though Hardy was adamant at one point that anything over two games was too much in a case that was dismissed.
As it stands now, Hardy is suspended beginning on Saturday which means he better file the paperwork quickly if he plans on taking the NFL to court. Hardy is not scheduled to return to action until the October 11th game against the New England Patriots. Of course, with today's news it makes the NFL look plenty foolish and just begs the question if the owners and commissioner are now open to meet with the NFLPA on significant changes to the CBA. One thing is certain, Roger Goodell cannot be the disciplinary committee all by himself because that is definitely not working. The NFL will appeal this ruling and it surely looks as though none of this is over just yet. Not for Brady, the NFL, and possibly Greg Hardy or his Cowboys.
