One more step in the possible return to the field for the Cowboys veteran quarterback.

Yesterday, Tony Romo stepped onto the Dallas Cowboys practice field for the first time since his back injury to throw passes in individual drills. As we noted, Romo was in a t-shirt and shorts. Today, Romo took it a step further and showed up in a helmet and shoulder pads to participate in the early individual drills.

As this progresses, the time is getting closer to when the Cowboys will have to address their quarterback situation in a public way. For now, with Romo just starting to get his football legs back under him, the Cowboys will be content to make statements like Jason Garrett did at his press conference today when he said Romo is progressing and had a good day yesterday.


“This is just the next step for him,” coach Jason Garrett said. “He’s been throwing on his own. It’s good to see him back out on the field. He didn’t throw that many balls. He got integrated into the individual work, the routes on air and I thought he threw the ball well (Wednesday).”

Romo didn’t participate in the stretching part of the practice, a likely indicator that he wouldn’t be doing anything more than just throwing some passes in the early warm-up sessions.

As for the rest of the injured, Dez Bryant, Tyron Smith, Lance Dunbar and Orlando Scandrick were all present at practice. Missing were Chaz Green and Ryan Davis.
