The Cowboys are trying to work a last-minute trade for Romo.

Per a new report by Chris Mortensen, the Cowboys are now trying to trade Tony Romo instead of releasing him at the deadline as previously reported.

This is a complete change to what we’ve been hearing for the last 24 hours. It was assumed that Romo would be released today once the 4 PM EST deadline hits. This new report is by a credible journalist in Mortensen and even includes the extra information about Trevor Siemian and the New York Jets.

ESPN says:

Tony Romo is now expected to be traded rather than released by the Dallas Cowboys with both the Denver Broncos and Houston Texans, according to league sources.

Details are not clear but the Cowboys now believe they have a trade that will work for Romo and the team, sources said.

It still seems like a bit of a longshot coming as it does with less than two hours to go before the free agent deadline. But the Cowboys could just hold on to Romo for a little longer if they think a trade is viable. This certainly changes things up, and Romo is said to have Houston and Denver as a couple of his preferred destinations so he might be inclined to re-structure his contract.

Stay tuned...
