The Dallas Cowboys need to once again show some major resiliency, and this time it's going to have to come down the home stretch of the 2014 season.
It's just not correct to say that the Dallas Cowboys have their backs against the wall currently, because technically, they don't. A loss to the Chicago Bears on Thursday night wouldn't eliminate them from the playoffs, but boy, it would make life a whole lot harder than it already is. Yes, losing to the Philadelphia Eagles hurt badly, but the Cowboys need to refocus and show the resiliency that we all know that they're capable of.
The Cowboys have the talent to make the playoffs, and also to do even more damage than just that. In order to do it though, this team needs to do what they've done all season, and that is to bounce back in a big way.
A Look At The Cowboys' Resiliency
Let's go back to Week 1. You know, when they lost in brutal fashion to the San Francisco 49ers. They bounced back after that by winning six games in a row, including a 16-point win against the Tennessee Titans the very next week.
During that stretch of wins, there were plenty of times when the Cowboys had to show resiliency, including Week 3 against the St. Louis Rams. Dallas was down 21-0, and the team matched the biggest comeback in team history, winning that game 34-31.
Let's look at the Houston Texans' win in Week 5 now. In this one, they were actually ahead, and looked like they'd get a nice win to continue their streak without much of an issue. After the Texans scored twice in the last 2:27 of regulation, though, things completely changed. This time, the team had to show that resiliency in an overtime effort. They got the job done, thanks to the Tony Romo and Dez Bryant connection, and the impressive leg of Dan Bailey.
Last but not least comes after the back-to-back losses against the Washington Commanders and Arizona Cardinals. Sure, Romo's injury played a major role in both of those games, but they bounced back with two wins in a row. Most will argue that beating the Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Giants isn't much to talk about, but if you believe that taking on a divisional rival in the NFC East on the road is an easy task, then you just haven't been paying attention.
The NFL is a brutal league, and winning games isn't an easy task, even for the strongest teams in the league. This is why showing that comeback ability is so very important.
Biggest Test Yet
Those were all impressive, and resilient efforts by the Cowboys, but none will be as big as what this team faces now. The doubters are ready to start firing on all cylinders, and the fans are simply hoping that they don't have to go through another offseason of playing the "what if" game. Hecklers are already starting to come out of the woodwork to talk about the Cowboys and Romo falling apart late in the season once again. For Romo? This is the time when he wants his team and everyone to know that there needs to be that sense of urgency.
"More than anything, it's a time to start playing your best football and our football team needs to understand the sense of urgency is now," quarterback Tony Romo said. "I think that it's time to take the next step and I think our guys understand the sense of urgency of right now and what's available and what's ahead of them if they can go on and play their best football."
There are no more excuses, and there is no more time to explain the missed opportunities. The Cowboys need to show the resiliency now. They need to play with a playoff-level of urgency starting on Thursday night against the Bears. Confidence isn't wavering in Tony Romo after the loss to the Eagles, but he'll need to put this team on his back at times, and show the entire country what he's capable of doing.
While it's on the Cowboys to show that resilient mindset that we've seen all season, it's on Romo to backup his own words and play with that sense of urgency.
