The Cowboys and every other NFL team have just completed their roster cuts to reach the mandated 53 players. But there's another roster cut of sorts looming:
90 minutes before every game the teams must declare seven players inactive for the game. Therefore the list of players that can actually play consists of just 46 players.
And even though a lot can happen between now and Sunday when the Cowboys host the Giants in the season opener, I'm going to take a stab at predicting who those seven inactives could be.
CB Jourdan Lewis - Lewis has not yet recovered from a hamstring injury that has kept him out of all but one full practice in camp.
LB Anthony Hitchens - The bone fracture in his knee means he won't play, and since the Cowboys haven't moved him to IR (yet), he's a logical selection.
QB Cooper Rush - The Cowboys announced today that they moved Rico Gathers to IR. I can only assume they did this to re-sign Kellen Moore. If that's the case, then Moore will likely be the active QB and Rush will be inactive.
OL Byron Bell - The Cowboys don't usually dress more than two OL backups, so between Joe Looney, Chaz Green, and Bell, I'm picking Bell.
RB Alfred Morris - This assumes Ezekiel Elliott will be eligible to play on Sunday, and if he is, there's no way the Cowboys dress five backs. Morris is the odd man out.
WR Noah Brown - The Cowboys will not carry six active wide receivers, and assuming Ryan Switzer is healthy enough to handle punt return duties, Brown rides the pine.
CB Bene Benwikere - A handful of practices this week will not be enough not to make Benwikere a liability in pass coverage in what for him is a new scheme. The Cowboys are thin at CB (Scandrick, Carroll, Brown, Awuzie), but they were okay dressing just four corners in last year's season opener. Plus they have four safeties that can help out in a pinch.
What's your take, which seven players are going to sit against the Giants?
