The OTAs were voluntary, but the three-day minicamp starting today is mandatory.

The Dallas Cowboys will begin a three-day minicamp this afternoon. After nine voluntary OTA practices, the Cowboys will finally have mandatory practices. Fortunately for the team, the Cowboys haven’t had players skipping the OTAs like some other teams. The minicamp is mandatory and does come with fines if players miss it.

Under the CBA, the 2017 fine schedule for missing the minicamp consists of a $13,400 fine for the first day, a $26,800 fine for the second day, and a $40,205 fine for the third day. It’s a total of $80,405 for missing all three days.

That doesn’t mean that some players won’t be absent from practice, injuries always keep some players away, usually veterans.

According to Todd Archer, there is a list of Cowboys players who will not be participating in the upcoming practices. Wide receivers Cole Beasley and Lucky Whitehead are still suffering hamstring issues and will likely miss practice. That means Ryan Switzer continues to get the chance to show what he can do, something he’s taken advantage of in the OTA practices. The Cowboys will also be careful with defensive linemen DeMarcus Lawrence, Benson Mayowa and Stephen Paea, all recovering from various injuries.

Jaylon Smith should practice on two out of the three days if the Cowboys hold to the schedule they set for him previously. What part of practice he will take part in during the days he is on the field is still a question. The Cowboys will continue to be cautious.

A smattering of storylines people are interested ins seeing:

  1. The progress of Jaylon Smith.
  2. Who will take the lead for the left guard position.
  3. Will any rookie defensive backs stand out, and where will they line up?
  4. How does Taco Charlton look?
  5. Is Rico Gathers for real?

What is the biggest storyline you are looking for at the upcoming minicamp?
