BTB: Why The Cowboys Backup QB Situation Is Not As Bad As You Think

This is exactly why I lamented the Prescott pick. I don't want that kind of QB. They're garbage. They're fake. An athletic simpleton just running around with no rhyme nor reason. Dub him DP3. As in we're all hoping for a FG once in awhile. If you can't sustain a productive offense working entirely in the pocket if need be, and with a full playbook and route tree, I have no interest in you as a pro QB.

BTW, the answer to the question in the title of this nonsense is - "Because we're Cowboys fans."

I think the dual threat guys like showers and dak need time to develop.
say each has a 25% chance to succeed.
we need to get a couple to develop at any time.

Wasn't crazy about the pick either. But that's the hand we were dealt. We can either fold or try and make something of it. Therein is the rub. If the Cowboys do as they did in 2015 and attempt to make the offense as easy as possible for Moore, Prescott, or Showers the Cowboys are going to lose and lose very bad. The bright side to that approach is a high pick in the 2017 draft. Or, the Cowboys can adjust the offense to their QB's strength's and see what happens. That's all I'm saying...you don't have to yell...

Actually some Seattle fans routed for Russell Wilson before he succeeded, while others surely lamented.

That's your choice.

Meanwhile Wentz is Jeebus and Prescott the Debil, we all have your undying (until proven otherwise) crucible down to an unforgettable retentiveness.

http://www.bloggingtheboys.com/2016...ackup-qb-situation-is-not-as-bad-as-you-think

This leads to my preferred method of dealing with a major injury to Tony Romo in 2016. Roll Dak Prescott out there and use a full-on running attack sprinkled in with a package of throws that suit his abilities. The Cowboys offensive line along with Ezekiel Elliott will be asked to do the heavy lifting. But with Prescott you can add in another element. Quarterback draws, sprint rollouts and bootlegs with run/pass options, even zone-reads out of the backfield. Add in short and intermediate throws and try to grind down the clock, turn the ball over as little as possible, and protect the defense sounds like a better recipe than what we saw last year. When things go bad on offense, instead of forcing a throw or taking a sack, Prescott can just use his legs to get what he can.

In a previous thread, I asked the same question and the idea was scoffed. But given the origin of the offensive weapons the Cowboys added and the potential for Romo to be injured, why not try to switch things up? The Seahawks and Panthers, both playoff front-runners the past few seasons, have employed it with fairly decent success in recent years...why not the Cowboys? Granted, both the Panthers and Seahawk feature stifling defenses; that helps. But as long as you move the ball and do so in manner that generates points, why not play to the rookie's strength?

By the way, that was not a rhetorical question. Can anyone provide a plausible reason - outside of Cowboys coaches stubbornness to stick with their current system - why the Cowboys should not consider the option as a viable offense should Romo go down?

Both the Panthers and Seahawks have a QB who can actually plat the position of QB, not just a guy who lines up at QB and runs.

Why do people think Dak is fast? His 40 time isn't.

I mean, I have a different opinion on running quarterbacks than Risen Star, based on things like evidence. But I don't see Dak as being an effective running quarterback. Russell Wilson ran a 4.55. Prescott ran a 4.79, Peyton Manning ran something like a 4.8, And I've watched dak's tape. If you think there might be a hidden reserve of football, I hate to break it to you -- there isn't.

You "route" for whoever you want.

Blogging the Boys has completely lost their sense of objectivity. Every article they post for the most part is rose colored. As a "media' source, they are about as fair and balanced as Fox News.

Right, now is about time you head back over to CNN or MSNBC for your daily pablum.

Yes and if the Giants hadn't of inexplicably figured out a way to lose the first game when they had it in the bag we would have started the season 0-1

Agreed. Garrett gave it away and Manning gave it back from what I recall.

Ideally, Dak would not be running all day, as he did in the SEC. Dak has way too many weapons to feed the ball to to feel the need to win the game on his own. Zeke, Jackson, and Morris all have experience in the option and could make it work in the backfield. With Beasley, Whitehead, Dunbar, and Witten taking shallow routes, while Dez, Williams, and Butler take intermediate to deep routes, the Cowboys could keep a defense guessing all day. This is just a in case of emergency break glass option that I think has some merit.

I see what you are saying and I agree that as a "break the glass" kind of situation this could work. However, after watching our coaching staff fail to make adjustments last year I have less faith in them than Dak/Moore/Showers.

For one thing: The addition of Zeke means we can be a run-oriented, ball-control team. That lessens the chance of a Romo injury. Second: There's a big difference between Romo going down 1-3 games versus most of the season like last year. 1-3 games with Prescott, Moore, or whoever and you might weather the storm, even winning one or two of those games. Romo out for most of the year and the season is shot. The run game would not be enough to make up for that. Then we get another high draft pick and try again.

If Romo is out for a long period of time I think we're in a good situation because our backups are not good enough to win multiple games so we should be getting a high pick.

The bad news is if we desperately need a guy for a few weeks then I don't think we have a chance unless the playcalling gets wayyyy more deceptive.

And Wilson has a cannon, a good throwing base, intelligence (im not going there today with Dak) and throwing motion. Other than that Dak is the same prototype....

This is what happens with Dak, He doesnt beat out Moore or Showers. Dak and Showers are released, one of these 2 is signed to the PS. Or we keep him bc we drafted him fairly early only to be released later.

Don't take this wrong--I know that in any given draft the #7 QB may be higher or lesser regarded than the #7 QB in some other draft. But the fact that Wilson and Prescott were somewhere in the same range of regard makes it, at least, not such a slam dunk as seemingly is asserted here.

I can certainly understand that view...nothing I can do if they continue to refuse my phone calls...

actually ball velocity from wilson was 55mph while it is 54mph for prescott.
agreed on 40 time on prescott and wilson, but wilson does not have the cowboys ol to block for him.
but i doubt manning ran a 4.8 last year.

i think wilson needed time to learn to play in nfl, so looks like prescott will hopefully get the year or two to show.
of course we should be drafting more qbs.

Peyton never ran a 4.8, he will even tell you that

He may have ran on April 8th or 4/8/98 but he couldn't break 5 secs.

Wilson went to camp and earned the job from jumpstreet beating out Flynn and Tarvaris Jackson. We are talking about Dak maybe not beating out Showers, much less Moore.

you are correct.
wilson started as a rookie and had the highest qb rating as a rookie.
so he is an exception to the rule.

i certainly do not expect Dak to be the exception here.
but we do have a QB to develop this year.
even if he looks pretty good, we should draft more QBs.
