BUCS PART WAYS WITH DERRICK BROOKS AND OTHERS

Posted by Mike Florio on February 25, 2009, 1:16 p.m.

Despite having $50 million or more in cap space, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have embarked on a youth movement, which apparently has put in jeopardy anyone on the roster older than the head coach.

According to Pewter Report, the Bucs are releasing linebacker Derrick Brooks, receiver Joey Galloway, receiver Ike Hilliard, linebacker Cato June, and running back Warrick Dunn.

Holy crap.

All players affected are over the age of 30. Head coach Raheem Morris is only 31.

More to come.

Cato June, eh?

looks like he didn't fare too well in the Buc, cover-2, but was great in Indy's

Surprised Ronde Barber wasn't cut.

He's good? ;)

Actually Tiki interviewed him at the pro bowl and apparently Ronde and their new coach are actually good friends, so maybe that helped him out.

I'm not surprised with their cuts, but I imagine this puts them in the market for a WR or two. I think they pick 19th overall, wouldn't be surprised to see them go with Heyward.

All of them at once surprises me some but it wasn't unexpected. Heard Dunn a week or so ago say he didn't expect to stay there but he'd like to. He's still got some use despite his age. Just one of those amazing players I guess. Brooks can still play but I wouldn't want him unless they lose Burnett. He'd be a great nickle/dime guy for a year IMO. Somebody will give him a 2 year contract at least for more money than he's worth to us though.

Consdiring how tight he is with the new head coach, wasn't much of a surprise... Derrick Brooks should always be a Buc though.

It makes sense. The veterans older than the head coach will probably have a harder time buying into what likely is going to be his rah rah style.

The same sort of thing is happening elsewhere. Young head coaches will have younger rosters. Denver is in a similar boat.

Joey Galloway anyone?

BUCS CUTS CLEAR AT LEAST $9.5 MILLION IN CAP SPACE

Posted by Mike Florio on February 25, 2009, 1:37 p.m.

As if the Buccaneers didn’t already have more cap room than Abraham Lincoln (yeah, we’ve used it before — we continue to be as cool as the other side of the pillow), Wednesday’s stunning decision to part ways with linebackers Derrick Brooks and Cato June, receivers Joey Galloway and Ike Hilliard, and running back Warrick Dunn have triggered an immediate cap savings of $9.5 million.

All of the released players were entering the final years of their contracts. Based on their 2009 base salaries, Brooks’ departure frees up $3 million in cap space. June’s release creates $1 million in cap room. For Galloway, the savings is $2 million. As to Dunn, it’s $2.5 million. Hilliard’s release saves another $1 million.

If any of the players were due to receive roster bonuses, workout bonuses, or potential incentives, the cap savings will be even higher.

So the question becomes what in the heck will the Bucs do with all that cap space?

Count Albert Haynesworth and Julius Peppers among those who are curious.

The Bucs new HC appears clueless, at least during his press conference, where it sounded like he was reading everything he said straight from an interview manual. I'm sure he didn't make these moves. I can't even understand how he got the job. Are we sure Jerry didn't buy the Bucs in some under the table deal. This guy looks like a Jerry type Coach. He won't last two years there.

The Buccaneers think they have themselves a Tomlin. At least Tomlin ran a defense. Morris is woefully inexperienced. Luckily he has an experienced staff for the most part. He'll need it.
