From the 50,000-watt tower of babel in beautiful Farmers Branch, where our rural tendencies keep popping up, Air Cowboys America brings you a burning question.

:starspin:starspin:starspin:starspin:starspin

Listen boys, my hat is of to Jerra.
The man has worked wonders with FAs, the draft, re-signings.
Look at the roster. Look at positions. Stocked.
He's done the best he can and it has been, IMHO, spectacular.

But ya know, as well as he's done, the Cowboys remain woefully deficient and also lacking in a key area.

Backup QB.

Yes, I can see some out there. Shocked. We don't talk about these things, you see. In the words of our marshmallow HC, "we're fine."

But I don't thank Brad Johnson is up to the task. Honestly. We need new and young and mobile blood as a backup to Romo.

Take a look at this link about the Bucs. They have some capable but unhappy QBs who the Bucs might cut loose.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/bucky_brooks/06/11/bucs/index.html

If you had a choice, who'd you pick?
Me, I'd take Simms over Garcia. Simms is younger and I'd like to see Garrett et. al work him into the Cowboys system. Even a Plummer would be an upgrade though he's be last resort.

C'mon, Jerra, give it a look-see.

Yes, I am visionary. No thanks necessary.

I definitely think we should have picked one up in the draft BJ has the tendency to short arm balls and he's been doing so all off season. You never hear of him overthrowing someone I don't think he has enough gas left in the tank.

We were rumored to like Booty. But the Vikings tapped that before we could.

Yeah, you're the first poster to mention that the Bucs have a few too many quarterbacks... this is why we all look to you for our football guidance, oh master of the obvious...

Surely we're not the only NFL team that could say THAT...

I know I'm personally a big fan of booty...

I want to ask a serious question. It is not meant to inflame or get some huge flamewar going.

However if Simms did not play for a certain college team that many on this board follow...would we even be considering him?

Now I know we are only talking Backup QB here but maybe it is just me but I just have never been too impressed with him and think he has been mostly hype due to his name and due to the school he went to.

I am not arguing that we don't need to replace Brad. I just don't know why we could not look at someone else who either would be cheaper and have more upside. Or just find a different vet who could probably be just as good.

When the cowboys signed Brad Johnson they knew he was old and didn't have the arm strength that QB should have. Yet they still signed him because he didn't require many reps as younger players do. I wouldn't mind seeing a QB come in to earn a roster spot but I would not even give up a 7th round for one. Anyone who they bring in that would be available will probably not replace Brad. We would be looking for a 3rd qb more than a 2nd. Only way to get Brad replaced is to put together some picks and get someone worth it. Otherwise this is the QB roster for the 08-09 season.

According to news reports here in Tampa, Simms and Gruden are having a relationship crisis. I could see Simms in Dallas.

Lucky you, because Simms is much more available....and most consider him light years behind Garcia. he is younger, so maybe he would be a good match for a backup somewhere...and he does have room to grow.

As for Johnson, I think he can drive the bus for 2-3 games if Romo went down with a minor injury. If Romo goes down for the season, we are toast anyway.

I don't follow that team and am not a fan of that college team.

I have however seen Simms play a bit in the NFL. He has shown flashes -- he's got a pretty solid arm and seems to have a bit of that intangible leadership quality (he was actually starting to show that a good deal right before he got hurt). He learned the right way in this league -- by having his butt pressed against the pine for most of his career.

He clearly is not a starting quality QB and likely will never be one. But I think he could be a good backup because he has enough arm strength to keep a team honest.

Backups pretty much come in two types. Most are either a good decision maker or have good physical tools - few have both qualities (otherwise they would be starting). In both cases the staff has to scale back the play book. Personally, i prefer the good physical tools guys because you can keep plays that use the entire field (i.e., long passes etc.). For a good decision making-bad arm backup you pretty much take away all of your intermediate to deep passing game.

That said, the only scenario I could see for Simms here is if a) he was replacing Johnson and b) Bartel remained on the roster.

If Simms is released, he is going to Miami. Not here.

You got me there, Brain.
It is natural that we root for our hometown boys.
But Simms has always struck me as a great QB waiting to happen. He's got good genes too.
Gimme a break on this one. Simms would be waaaaay preferable to Brad Johnson, though I do respect BJ's experience and dedication to his sport, which now spans two centuries.
