I thought I would take a few minutes and look up what % of our OL is home grown (drafted by us) vs other teams. I only had time to compare with NFC East teams but interesting nevertheless.

Cowboys (40%) Gurode, Adams

Giants (60%) Snee, Diehl, Seubert

Eagles (60%) Herremans, Jackson, Andrews

Skins (60%) Samuels, Dockery, Heyer

I don't want to speak so soon, but I am not that worried about our O-Line depth as I was earlier in the year.

Free seems to be coming around and could probably hold his own this year, but probably needs one more year to be fully ready.

I'll take Holland at backup guard, especially since he can play both positions. If Colombo gets hurt you can either:

1. Swing Free to Right Tackle

OR

2. Move Bigg to Right tackle, insert Holland to RG.

And I get the feeling that if Brewster can avoid injury, he may be a good one. He's a Hudson Houck pick and Houck deserves the benefit of the doubt and they were ready to make Brewster a 2nd string RT until he got hurt. He could also come back say in week 5 or 6 and just get practice time and learn the game.

Procter is the guy that scares me. If Brewster shows promise, Free plays as good as advertised, then we should look at getting a guy that can play center/guard in the draft and play him as center in 2010.

If I'm concerned about depth, it's more at WR (if Roy goes, that's a problem) and cornerback.

I like your sig pic. Rickey was the bomb. Living in California at the time, I rooted for the A's. I still do

I'm from NY and I"m a NYY fan and watched Rickey when he was with the Yanks, even though he was far better with the A's. However, I think he was probably the most underrated player of all time. Most all-time runs scored and an absolute pain in the arse for pitchers because he could get on base and hit for power. So you had to throw strikes against him, but you couldn't just throw him a meatball over the plate.

Anyway, back to the thread.

Dockery was brought in from Buffalo. Sure the Skins were the team that originally drafted him, but they also let him get away at one point. Maybe he should count has half bringing the Skins down to 50%.

My one disappoint with Parcells was that he failed to draft good offensive linemen. My fault really because that was the main thing I was hoping and thought he would be able to do for Dallas. And Jerry has not done any better than Parcells since Bill's departure. Part of that is that he was counting on Bill's guys instead of just moving forward.

Best lead off hitter in history. He had a .401 on base percentage. That is higher than Pete Rose's .375 on base percentage. And once he got on base he was likely to steal second and get in scoring position, which led to him becoming the all time leader in runs scored.

Seubert, Jackson and Heyer weren't drafted. And Dockery left as a free agent and came back as a free agent.

houck has been a huge dissapointment for me since he has been here.

He's been here for one year, with guys he didn't draft and hasn't coached. Flo was injured last year, Kosier was injured and IIRC, Gurode was banged up.

Is there any team in the NFL starting 4 or 5 home growns?

I haven't broken it down by starts yet, but last year, Carolina, Green Bay and Seattle all had five players they drafted each play at least 60 percent of their offensive snaps. So those guys probably started at least half of the games.

Baltimore, Denver, Indianapolis, New England, New Orleans and San Francisco each had four.

I am quite jealous of those teams.

It's be even nicer to have a LB corps like Pittsburgh. Tons of home grown talent that rolls off your tongue. Brooking, Stewart, Carpenter, Spencer, et al doesn't have the same effect. Ware/James do at least. Work in progress. ;)

Well they were UDFA by their respective teams. To me that's still home grown. It would be like saying Romo is not home grown.

Then you shouldn't have said "drafted by us."

And does it really matter where the players came from? I mean, would anyone be happier if we cut Kosier and Colombo, then started Procter and McQuistan? That would give us four "homegrown" players starting, but it wouldn't make the line any better.

And Heyer is terrible, so who cares? Andrews is a nutball who has serious mental issues. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't play again this year...

And are we supposed to apologize for gaining a Pro bowl RG and very good RT who mauls people?

It would be hard to draft guys or find many in the league that are better than them at their respective positions anyway. I could see if our line was terrible, it is far from terrible.

The Steelers LB corps was once a work in progress, too. They cut James Harrison three times early in his career before he finally came around and improved his game.

I believe there's a correlation between 'homegrown' starters on the roster and success. I haven't looked it up in awhile, but last I checked Championship teams tend to have 14-18 'homegrown' starters. I think the reason being is that the homegrown players usually come at some sort of discount and that helps with depth. Furthermore, it's probably an indication of the team's ability to find quality talent and develop it...so the backups are probably up and coming players as well.

The Commanders are usually the antithesis of this, usually ranging in the 8-11 homegrown starters each year. Right now they only have 10 'homegrown starters' which isn't surprising given how little they have valued the draft over the years.

The "home grown" arguement is for baseball....not football, where there is a hard cap in place. It is specifically for schmos who want to give Yakuza a hard time about being a Yanks fan...when in reality the yanks have a pretty large amount of "home grown" talent.
