Burress, Shockey miss voluntary program

By ERNIE PALLADINO
THE JOURNAL NEWS
(Original publication: March 20, 2007)

The Giants had a strong turnout for the opening of their voluntary offseason strength-and-conditioning program yesterday.
Most of the team showed up, save for Eli Manning's two main receiving options. As usual, tight end Jeremy Shockey and wide receiver Plaxico Burress were no-shows. They have worked out on their own in agent Drew Rosenhaus' facility in Miami the past two years.
One might remember it was Shockey's absence that drew Manning's ire two years ago when Manning called him out for working out on his own. Shockey basically shrugged off the criticism and went his own way anyway. And when Burress was asked after the 2006 season whether he would work at Giants Stadium if Tom Coughlin were replaced, he said, "Tell (the new coach) I'll see him in training camp."
The two have attended the mandatory mini-camps the last two years. Missing those would have resulted in fines. But it is not known whether they will show up for any work before the mini-camp, even though Manning insisted that he wanted to get in some quality throwing with them before the mini-camp.
"I don't want to comment on it," the players' co-agent, Jason Rosenhaus, said.
Defensive tackle William Joseph did show up, however, despite making himself absent the year before as he trained with Shockey and Burress.

For all their outwardly projected bravado, Shockey and Burress have done very little to establish a great working relationship with their franchise quarterback. It seems like they're only wanting to show up for the games; and if the timing is off during the games between themselves and their quarterback, it's not their fault.

Keep up the good work, guys. The only thing you're insuring is a Giants' offense lacking the best execution possible. That bodes well for your division opponents.

I thought they had to attend Coughlin's "voluntary" work outs, or was that something else?

Well, it's not like anyone confused these two clowns as class acts in the first place. It would have been a bigger surprise if they had actually shown up.

I remain shocked that the league allows voluntary workouts at all. If the team expects everyone to show up and the media make a big deal about players not being there then it is hardly "voluntary"

it's voluntary because they voluntarily decided not to go

Hello. It's Shockey and Burress. What was he thinking. What did he expect.

They don't get the "team" aspect, that intangible that puts good teams over the top.

Now that Parcells has retired (again), I wonder who will Shockey call a homo? He may not attend voluntary workouts, but he will put his foot in his mouth up to his knees.

I'm not, it allows those who are dedicated to their profession and to the team concept to attain greater precision and execution than those who are not.

Just goes back to the motto of hard work pays off and being part of a team concept, but guys like Shockey and Buress would rather not show and then like to show up their QB on game day when they do not get the pass thrown their way.

It still reamins voluntary, no matter how much of a big deal the media makes of it. It makes the players look bad and I think it should. They have a chance to get together with their team and keep some of the cohesiveness and familiarity going and they decide not to.

I sure am glad these two attitude problems ARE NOT on our team--you think T.O. is bad?

Um, "The Player" also refused to participate in off-season workouts, which makes this thread very comical and irony-free.
