The majority of people who call the game seem to think he is much better than the majority of the fan base thinks he is.
I have seen some articles that are not from a Dallas based media who also think he is better than the fan base thinks he is as well.

I would love to see what he could do on a team that has a good established Pass rush and a secondary that stays healthy and productive enough that he is not asked to play different positions.

I think he is much better than much of our fan base thinks.

With that said...I think he would be much better with better players surrounding him.

Darren Woodson said he was the best player on defense (or was that the best player in the secondary)?

He's not horrible. He's the reason why Cook was open on the final play. His athleticism doesn't show up on the field. He's kind of just there.

He's great at covering tight ends, but has a lot of work to do to be an NFL safety.

This.

Fair and honest assessment. He is not bad but he is not a difference-maker...yet.

Well not really. The point of the thread was to hear those opinions

Those opinions are from fans who watch the game on TV. They don't even see all of the defense at the snap of the ball in most cases. This site is filled with fans. So soliciting their opinion is what you get. In nearly all cases you are getting an uninformed individual talking about something where he doesn't have enough information to make an intelligent comment.

I fall under this category as well.

Extremely athletic. Covering speed to make up for misreads. No feel for the receiver.

Two really odd years so far.

Year one probably the best TE coverage here in a long time. Moved around too much.

Year two less successful manned up with TE. Covered for others mistakes. Took away the big play. Played more in the slot than people realize. Still being bounced around a lot. He lines up 20 yards off the ball. Not sure if this is because he can or because of what others cannot but I believe it's the latter. Being so far back helps to prevent big plays but also takes away from his ability to create turnovers and opens up the middle for opponents.

Clueless player in zone coverage...gets by on athleticism when in man coverage. I highly suspect his ability when it comes to diagnoising offensive schemes...and what teams are trying to do to him. I think the Cowboys have simplified their scheme to the point where Jones knows who he is covering...and that's about it. He doesn't disguise coverages very well...and gets himself out of position quite often. If the Cowboys were to ever try and disguise coverages...I think he would be a huge liability...because he doesn't grasp the basic concept of different coverages. He also gets fooled w/ double moves instead of being able to anticipate what route a WR/TE is running. I think it's a big year for him this year. Hopefully he starts to "get it"....or he could quickly be a one contract player...and out of here like Claiborne/Mike Jenkins.

Looks like 10% of the voters don't know what they are talking about. Sounds about right.

I'm always surprised in these poll threads how level-headed the voting turns out.

I know for a fact I've been in debates about whether or not Byron Jones is an outright bust.

Hes the reason Cook was open? Rodgers made a throw that only he can make, after being forced out of the pocket and Jones took the other man. Yeah, lets put the whole play on him.

It was on Bryon Jones go back and watch the film. There is no way a player gets that open on that kind of play unless someone blows coverage. Stop giving Aaron Rodgers so much credit as if he made that play out of nothing. The truth is AR recognize the hole Jones left and attack it. Just admit the fact our secondary blew coverage.

I thought he was very good. His instincts are still not quite there. He's a 1/2 second off and that is what prevents him from being a great safety. Hopefully with more time and practice, he'll start to be on point from the get go and his athleticism will make him an elite safety.

Easy to blow coverage when a QB has 6 plus seconds to throw a ball. but sure, whatever helps you sleep at night. Lets also not forget the huge hold on Irving on that play. That doesnt happen, Rodgers is in the dirt. Keep blaming Byron Jones though. It was ALL him .

I'm with Brainpaint. I've heard plenty of commentators and analysts that say Byron Jones is a good player. I think they will know more than the average fan does. These people have access to coaches and game tape....things most of us on here do not have access to.
