Byron Jones to get second opinion on shoulder

OXNARD, Calif. -- Dallas Cowboys first-round pick Byron Jones will get a second opinion on his left shoulder that was injured during Sunday’s practice.

Jones did not practice on Monday against the St. Louis Rams, but after practice he said an MRI came back negative and he felt like he would not need a lot of time off to recover.

Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said the team is confident Jones will be OK, but he had surgery on the shoulder last season at Connecticut.

“Obviously we’ve got a lot invested there and we want to make sure we do it right,” Stephen Jones said.

Byron Jones took part in the morning special teams’ walk-through. He suffered the injury in a collision with cornerback Morris Claiborne on a deep crossing route. He said he regained most of his strength not long after getting checked out by the doctors and has a full range of motion.

Jones took part in the Monday morning walk-through before getting the MRI.

“I was just worried about the shoulder because you don’t hit it that hard too often,” Byron Jones said. “I was worried, but after I got up and moved around a little bit I felt fine.”

Left guard Ronald Leary and defensive tackle Tyrone Crawford did not take part in practice because of back stiffness. This is the second time Leary has missed a practice in camp because of his back.

Safety Barry Church left practice early with rib cartilage issues that Stephen Jones said had been bothering him for a little bit. Ken Bishop also left practice early.

OXNARD - Cowboys first-round rookie Byron Jones sustained a freak shoulder injury at training-camp practice on Sunday. The video alert update:

Dallas Cowboys first-round cornerback Byron Jones injured his left shoulder in a freak collision with teammate and fellow cornerback Morris Claiborne during Sunday's seven-on-seven drills at training camp and while the Cowboys insist it's not serious, it worth nothing that he had season-ending left shoulder surgery in 2014 in his final season at Connecticut.

“That sure was a concern because that was the shoulder he had fixed,” owner Jerry Jones said, via Davison. “If we had to do anything we could probably do some playing, but under the circumstances we’ll just rest him real good and call it a good thing it worked out.”

In other words, the Cowboys think -- or hope -- this isn't serious. Nevertheless, it will keep Byron out of two days of joint practices with the Rams, which start Monday. He’s also not likely to play in the second preseason game, against the 49ers. He'll join a host of other Cowboys with a similar status, including Dez Bryant (hamstring, who notes in this exclusive visit with Fish that he's ready to be "on fire'') and Tyron Smith (biceps).

Worth noting: Fish is also reporting that with Tyron out, the Cowboys are prepared to start experimenting with rookie La'el Collins at left tackle this week -- and with the Rams in town for Monday and Tuesday workouts, it's a perfect time to do so.

CHQ talked to Claiborne after the practice, and he noted he was uninjured while calling the collision a “football accident.” He also noted that the two guys simply didn't see each other when crashed into one another.

"I hope he's alright,'' Mo said.

With the exception of Byron Jones, are these guys really injured? Maybe just an excuse to skip day of work, lol.

Of course the irony of it being Claiborne involved in BJ's injury just makes this a total palm to forehead situation. One corner who has forever been a PUP is now some how complicit in making another one. Yeah it was an accident and coulda happened to anyone. But of course it happens to Claiborne. Smh. The guy is beyond snakebit.

How is it "freak"? It happened during practice. Not like they were reaching for the same bottle of Gatorade and collided.

why would you need a second opinion on something that needs a little rest unless its worse then being said?

Freak is in the title is designed to get more web hits.

I guess he is saying that is was a freak accident for 2 defenders to run into each other. I assume that 99.x percent of injuries do not involve getting hit by your teammate.

That thought struck me as well.

Lately when it comes to evaluating injuries in Dallas, you start off as day to day and end up on IR.

I do hope I’m wrong.

If he doesn't play against the 49ers on Sunday, it's not nothing.
