The defense is poor and there is no magic potion - make no mistake about it. However, our supposed big-time players need to step up and make key plays to kill drives. That's the difference between giving up 34 points in a half to GB and giving up 24-27 points over an entire game - even with an overall poor defense.
1. Ware - Diversify your attack. Stop running 7 yds outside of the play on every down. Can you make a couple of stops on running downs behind the LOS on 1st and 2nd down? Is it too much to ask for a 2-3 sack game against essentially a rookie QB and an injured Trent Williams?
2. Hatcher - Similar to Ware. Need some run stuffs on 1st and 2nd down. If not sacks, need you to at least flush the QB out of the pocket on passing downs against a poor interior Redksins OL.
3. & 4. Carr and Scandrick - Garcon is a very good WR but this is overall a mediocre group of wideouts. Need to stick to these guys and force Cousins to make tough throws in tight windows. A pick or two would not hurt.
5.Carter - This guy is physically capable of bailing out the LB corps. Need him to just play fast and physical. If he is not a factor, the LB corps will be completely exposed and dominated by the Skins running game. We're catching a break now that Jordan Reed is out. So the passing threat at TE shouldn't be as much of a threat.
Those 5 guys must step up and have good games. While guys like Heath, Hayden, Selvie, Lawrence etc.. are easy targets, we have to be realistic. These are backups at best. These types are only effective in an expanded role when the supposed big $ players do their part, which hasn't been the case very often on defense.
