How the hell are the deadskins apparently in on so many potential FAs? They're 25th in the league with 4.3 mil currently available yet they are being talked about in dealings with high profile FAs like clements? Is this some kind of joke where Washington is automatically in on every single FA available because they break the bank any chance they get?

I don't see how they manage to stay under the cap with the type of money the push out to anybody. They throw out huge deals then the very next year they have to restructure them. But hey, as long as they keep shelling out elite money to the archuletas/lloyds/ and carters I'm all for it.

Yeah I realize that but how are they even involved in talks related to Clements and other high profile FAs in the first place when they have 4.3 million available? Many places put Washington as a potential home for a myriad of FAs and it just doesn't make any sense to me how that's possible.

Smoot probably came at a bargain because not too many teams would have made a serious push for him...

No matter what, because of the front office's tendency to throw money in every odd direction, whenever the ESPN, SI, PFT, what have you people consider a free agent's possible suitors they include the Commanders to keep their bases covered when Danny and Vinny do something completely ********.

So far Smoot is supposed to be signed though it hasn't been announced yet. We didn't even make a play for Clements apparently which is good. The less money we throw around, the more low key the offseason, the better.

I expect London Fletcher to be signed as our only real big name, (I don't think Smoot is a big deal these days is he?) and we are supposed to be looking at a nickel corner, supposedly we have Travis Fisher from the Rams in town so I would not be surprised if we picked him up for cheap.

We are thrown into the Leonard Davis mix, I guess Dockery really asked for way too much...I don't think we will sign him however. We would want him to shift inside to guard the same as Dallas. He is supposedly not too happy about the idea of playing for New York so between Washington and Dallas who are both offering similar deals from what I am told, I think he goes with his home state's team and becomes a Cowboy.

Its called people just speculating or agents trying to link their client to Washington to drive up the price. They don't have the cap room to be significant players in FA this year. They have made some moves to get about $10 million under the cap but they only have about 40 players under contract. Signing draft picks and filling ou the roster will only leave room for one or two high priced players so the fact that they appear to be in the hunt for every player out there is pure BS started by someone who doesn't have a clue or somebody's agent.

Their owner has to much money and does not care if he loses money or games.

just to clarify, we didnt have 4.3 mil at the start of free agency. I had somewhere near 12 mil in free cap at the start, and with the new contract thomas got, it could be greater.

Now, take away the re-signing of Vernon Fox, and the signing of Smoot, it will probably be around 9-10 mil left

Ahhh, that must be why y'all settled for Fred Smoot, instead of going right out and signing Nate Clements, the way everybody was just CERTAIN you guys would do...

And of course, that certainly explains why you couldn't get Derrick Dockery re-signed... it'll be fun, seeing how the Skins try to fill in that hole on the offensive line...

4-5 good depth signings > 1 nate clements signing...

but you know, its funny though. You all sit here and bash the skins for signing big free agents, then when we settle for a more price efficient prospect, we get bashed again. And who is this "everybody" that you are talking about. Couldn't possibly be the media? no couldnt be, the same media that said it was a done deal that Nate would go to Tennessee?

As for dock, he is asking for more then what we want to sign him for. He is asking for Randy Thomas type money, when he isn't on that level. Why pay someone more money then another starter who is better?

The Skins set up their contracts to make the cap hits pretty light in the first year. After that, they increase by quite a bit. Essentially, they throw money out to FA's and wind up having to pay the big $$$ down the road instead of right now.

The one problem with this is that they wind up having to find players that are making very low contracts and have them play backup and usually if you're paying a player a low amount of money, that's the quality you're going to get. So if the FA's either get injured or don't play well, there's a big hole left.

All the time? care to elaborate? (actually, dont, I wouldnt want to make you actually back up a claim for once)

the only person we have ever done this for is Archuleta. otherwise, why do you think we let the likes of Ryan Clark, Fred Smoot, and Antonio Pierce walk?

because they asked for more money then they were worth.
