Can or will we re-sign Canty?

Actually, I think Spears makes too much for what he actually does. I'd try to trade him.

I think RLW probably needs to move on as well. I don't know if he wants to play football anymore.

I think that Henry probably needs to go if he can't play Safety.

I think Carpenter probably needs to be moved to a 43 team.

Offensively, I think Procter needs to be gone.

I think Johnson probably needs to retire.

I think TO either needs to be moved or we need to probably think about moving two other WRs between Stanback, Crayton, Austin and Hurd.

Well I look at it as if Roy is better than anyone we currently have at safety. I love what Keith Davis has done but I still think Roy offers more at the position. As far as Spears goes, I can't really comment on him too much. He doesn't get to the quarterback but we don't expect him to. Same goes for Canty. The pass rush is suppose to come from the linebackers and they've done a great job. I don't even expect to get sacks from the nose tackle spot. That's just a added bonus from Ratliff(he's been a monster btw). I think with the line you're not suppose to hear their names called. Whether it be negative or positive. So sometimes what they do go unnoticed. My opinion of the line is that as long as they clog up the line so that our linebackers can get some pressure than i'm fine. They've done that. Not sure if i'd replace that. I don't think Spears will ever put up monster stats but I don't think this Cowboys team expects him too.

Canty had a good game against the GMen but other than that he has regressed greatly this year. Hatcher i believe is an RFA so is likely going nowhere but again he's another that has done nothing.
I would like the 'boys to resign Spears who IMO has improved alot and leads the boys in TFL.

Now is also the time that we need to start drafting guys that can backup and eventually start on this DL. It's not easy to draft 3-4 DE's out of college because so few teams there use the system

Why?

You are hypercritical of Canty and Hatcher. You would be just as critical too early of other good players who take time to develop. It hasn't been that long ago that Spears was considered a liability. Curious, isn't it, how a little patience can pay off?

Well, Last year I wanted to draft an ILB, a NT, an OT/OG, FS, QB and a WR.

You didn't want a CB last year? ;)

I wanted us to draft 5 CB's at one point after watching Nate Jones and Reeves play.

The thing about Procter right now, in my opinion, is that now that he's got some experience, he may actually be a decent 3rd team guard, which is what he should be right now, if not for injuries. It's just the fact that we're stuck with him starting that makes the situation so misrable.

I agree with everything you have stated except the fact that Roy brings more. At one point he did in the form of tackling although we knew he was a liability in coverage. I honestly think he carries to big of a price tag to continue having that hole in the secondary. As well as Davis have played, I would much rather give him his opportunity for much less of a contract.

I really echo your sentiments. The Boys smartest move will be to try to keep the Dline intact with what we have on the squad now. Good play comes with familiarity and knowing the tendency of the man beside you. Continuity is the name of the game.

The only real saving grace is he is 3-4 DE I just don't see a 4-3 team ponying up a truck load of cash for a DE that played in a different scheme. The question is how many 3-4 teams need the services of Canty and are willing to give him an above average pay day.

actually angus i am not hypocritical just realistic. Its nye on impossible to re-sign evrybody. Ratliff is the only player on the DL we have signed past 2009 season. Thats means that Spears, canty, Hatcher, Bowen & Tank all have the ability to test FA in the next 2 years. I say we need to draft DL depth because of this fact and then we dont end up having to throw millions at the position in FA like we had to on our OL because we drafted crap(Free,Maarten,Rogers,Johnson etc etc etc)

Some other team will see Canty as a sack machine in a 4-3 and pay him some big bucks...

I'm sorry I was hard on you. You are right that a number of players need to be signed, but there is a possibility that all can be signed without trouble because the new labor contract, if there is one, may allow it.

But my major concern is impatience by fans of players with talent that needs time to develop. The draft is not a sure thing, as your post indicates. Dallas has had two good drafts but the next one may not measure up. The D line aint broke, so don't fix it. Niether is the O line. Just add to them as necessary.

By the way, Welcome!

:)

No matter whether or not there's a CBA or what if any salary cap implications there are, you need new blood on your football team.

Rewarding a mediocre player like Canty doesn't make a lot of sense under any circumstances.

I think in Wade's style of defense Jason Hatcher is a better fit to be starting at one of our end spots than Canty or Spears.

To be honest, if we could get a good NT in the draft I would love to see our 3 man consist more of Hatcher/NT/Ratliff

That would be a sick line if the NT was a beast.

Not really. I wanted Scandrick but I wanted him to play FS for us. Don't get me wrong, I am not unhappy with Jenkins but I really wanted an ILB last year. Oh yeah, I wanted a RB but not Felix Jones in the 1st Rd. I actually wanted Charles, Forte, Rice or Slaton in the later rounds. Such is life.

3rd strong guard should be a developmental player - there just isn't anything there to develop because he is too limited physically.

Has Hatcher made a single play in the last 1.5 years because I really can't remember anything of significance. Clearly Canty and Spears are our best DEs outside of Ratliff.

I think we should make every reasonable effort to re-sign both of these guys as they could man those positions for us for another 5-6 years.

Excellent post. As said by others, I don't think Roy wants to play football.

I would resign Canty if he doesn't want too much... I would think about cutting elsewhere to clear up cap money for him....

I believe we may get rid of some dead cap money also... Is Terry Glenn's dad cap gone next year?

Brad Johnson's two year deal comes off the books... Burnett probably doesn't get resigned, SS Roy Williams is expendable, you could let Henry walk in the final year of his deal.... all will give us some cap to work with...

I'm in favor of locking up younger players vs older players... and keeping players that are harder to replace... for example as much as I like Burnett I don't think it's that hard to find a nickel linebacker in the draft or free agency...

Has anyone read if we've even tried to extend Chris Canty during the season?

Isn't that what we do with players who are in our long term plans?

Marcus Spears is under contract for one more season, so I don't think replacing Canty is that big a deal. We currently have Jason Hatcher, Stephen Bowen and Marcus Dixon (practice squad) as possibilities and we may slide Jay Ratliff out to end at times if we add another nose tackle.

I like Canty, but I just don't think he's a priority to keep.

Let Canty go. We don't have the cash to keep everyone. Ware will be the highest paid defensive player in the league soon.

Ideally we'd get a big NT and move Ratliff to one of the DE spots.

But with the way the D has been, we might keep him at the nose.
