Can Romo throw the deep ball?

I love Tony, but I can't say I've ever really seen him throw a REAL deep ball. No question that he has an arm and really, I'm not even sure that's a factor in it. It just seems as though the receivers are never truly all that far down the field before he's letting go of the ball and it's usually on a rope.

Maybe it's just lack of air under the ball? I'm not sure, but you never see him truly air it out in a traditional deep ball sense.

he threw that 50 yard td to owens against atlanta last year. he also threw a deep ball to owens against washington last year, but owens dropped it. but ive been wondering why we haven't even took a shot at a deepball this season too.

Romo threw eight deep balls (41 or more yards past the line of scrimmage) last season and completed two -- both to Owens. One was against DeAngelo Hall in Week 15, and the other was in Week 17. You can go watch the highlights on NFL.com.

Most teams don't throw "really" deep all that often. Tom Brady had only eight attempts of 41-plus all of last season (and only one this season going into Sunday's game), and Peyton Manning had only nine all of last season and none this season. They each completed two, and Brady had one picked off.

The answer is simple No! just go back to the pre-season game against houston. He underthrew owens by. like 10 yards from out of his own endzone.

The thing that gets me Adam, is why is this even an issue with some of these fans?

Does it really matter how great a deep ball a QB throws in a game to me it's all about going through progessions, and precision and Romo, is good at this.

I'm not complaining. I think he's going to go down as one of if not THE best Cowboys QB of all-time. I was just wondering. I mean, I watched Brady absolutely launch one, but I just couldn't remember Romo ever doing it, but mentioned above was the throw to Owens at Atlanta which I forgot about.

Also Adam's stats show I was wrong as well. That's fine. Either way. :)

he threw the ball 53 yards in the air vs Washington last year. The play where TO dropped it.

I think 53 yards in the air is considered deep don't you?

And you will continue to miss it as long as Romo is QB. He would underthrow Anthony Fasano on that play.

Bledsoe might have been a sack waiting to happen but he ran that play like once every 3 games because he had the arm to throw it 65 yards down the field.. Romo can't and never will. Intermediate Routes are is what he is good at and will continue to slowly drive the ball up the field unless someone makes a play.

I don't remember Aikman or Montana throwing a great deep ball. I do remember Jeff George though.

If you doubt Romo's ability to throw the deep ball, go back and take a lot at our game against the Bucs on Thanksgiving Day. I frequently do because it makes me smile to watch Romo throw to Terry Glenn. When you see that video, you really understand how much Glenn is missed in our offense. Anway, there were at least 2 deep balls to Glenn that day--both which were caught for big gains. You can find video of Cowboys Thanksgiving Day game on youtube.com.

I think he can, but it isn't one of his strength's like it would be Bledsoe's. Romo excels on the intermediate throws, so we throw them a lot. THose are still stretch the field throws when executed properly.

Romo, is not a good QB, because he can't throw the "deep ball".

Romo can throw the deep pass on a rope. But watching Brady and Eli throw their deep pass there is a difference. I’d like to see Romo work on that aspect of his game. Get more air under the bombs if he can.

Okay, you also need to see the one he threw to Owens, at Washington in which he dropped also for what would've been a 75 yd TD, and also he threw one to Owens, against the Lions, which he caught for a TD.

The deep ball is not a prerequisite of good quarterbacking it just one of those throws every NFL QB, has to make if not then they wouldn't be in the NFL.

Yes, he can throw deep ball, but it doesn't do any good if WR isn't or can't get open. He has a arm to air it out to ~50 yards, which is sufficient. Can he improve on long range tosses? Sure he can and I hope he improves as well as in other areas to make him a great QB some day.

In the New NFL teams can't protect a guy like Bledsoe on 7 step drops. He could throw 65 yard lasers but plays take too long to develop. Romo can loft a decent long pass. He just does not have a cannon. Aikman had no long ball - BTW

No biggie - JMO in the new NFL.

Aikman had no long ball? Tell that to your Washington Commanders, in 1991 he threw a hailmary before halftime to Alvin Harper for a 59 yard score in the endzone.

In 1999 he threw a 76 yard strike to Rocket Ismail for the win, the ball traveled 60 before Rocket sprinted the final 16 yards to victory.

Tell that to the Green Bay Packers who suffered the longest touchdown pass in playoff history against them in 1994.

It was 94 yards from Aikman to Harper, Aikman was in his own endzone, Troy threw the ball no less than 65 yards, I'd say he had a good deep arm.
