Can someone explain Philly's CAP situation?

They just paid a QB $13mil (or was it 15mil?) for this year. They have sunk around $40mil in guarantees for 2 running backs. And they signed an expensive corner.

They must be getting close to cap hell? Or do they have some unlimited funds arrangement with the NFL?

They'll be sorry eventually.

I forgot they tried this same thing several seasons ago & it was a major fail.

May they continue to fail.

The freed up money getting rid of Cole and Shady, last I heard they had close to fifty free, sure that's all gone now.

Here's how you can explain it.

The cap is a ridiculous illusion that many people don't understand because they are afraid of math. The NFL cap is sort of a joke in that you can pretty much do whatever you want.

On Path to the Draft, Mariota just said he has met with the Bucs and Eagles already.

If that's the case we can only be left with the conclusion the Cowboys didn't like Murray and didn't want him back.

If salary cap doesn't matter, who not spend the guaranteed money and total salary to return the engine that drove the offense.

They rolled over 15m from last year to begin with. They let McCoy, Maclin, Cole, Hermanns, Cary Williams and others go. They had over 50m in cap space when FA started. In a couple years they will release a lot more guys and start over when Kelly is gone.

They generally are very conservative and don't spend to the cap. They have left a few playoff victories on the shelf over the last decade by being so cheap.

Gotcha. Their spending this year will have consequences.

They had a ton of cap space heading into this free agent period and by indications after today, they still have like $15-20MM left in cap space BEFORE they can just cut DeMeco Ryans and save another $7MM. And it's now being reported they are trying to rework Bradford's deal which may save them more cap space. So they aren't approaching cap hell at this point. They've been very smart with contracts in the past and it's paying off now.

That being said, they have some big paydays coming up. For one, if Bradford turns out to be very good this year, they will have to cut him a new deal. And it won't be cheap. Then they have two big defenders coming up as well - Fletcher Cox and Kendricks. Cox, if he continues his trajectory, will be a bonafide elite DL this season and given what Suh just got, keeping Cox won't be cheap at all.

So it will be interesting to see how Philly works the cap going forward.
