Archer says this....

The Cowboys actually could trade one of their projected 2018 compensatory picks in next month’s draft, but the gnashing of teeth over the team’s low-key approach to free agency this year could bring a return in the form of a low-cost starter from 2018-21 from the draft’s third day.

Anybody know if that's correct? Trading a pick that doesn't exist yet?

I think the only way to do this would be to trade a particular "draft round" pick and say, "if we have a compensatory pick in that round, you get that pick, otherwise, you get our normal pick for that round."
It has already been done a couple times this year
NE and CLE ......... CLE and PHI

DAL is looking at a 4th, 5th , 5th and 6th for 2018 so they could trade them conditionally for picks this year as long as they are backed up by 'real' picks or other agreed upon compensation

I think you can't trade comp picks.

I don't think you have to specific the pick if it's conditional. A conditional pick could be a pick in 2018, 2019 or beyond.

But I don't think we need to be trading picks next year, anticipating compensatory picks. We don't know what our record will be. We could be picking at the top of each round.

I'd prefer to trade down since this is a deep draft at the positions we need (DE, S, CB, TE).

We know this a deep draft at CB, WR and DE

Next year maybe a Special Teams disaster draft like 2009

Use some of the 11 picks for 2018 now if they can

I think this is the right answer. You work around the pick not existing yet by stating a team gets the lowest pick of the round.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Interesting if true.

Could also explain why the Cowboys seem so intent on protecting their FA losses/signings ratio. Keep that fourth round in the hip pocket.

I would flip next year's comp fourth for the right kind of opportunity.

They actually have some wiggle room now. They could sign 4 free agents and still keep the (max)4 picks they've earned. Of course, how high those picks are, currently a 4th, two 5's, and a 6th, could change depending on who they signed. For example, signing Jonathan Hankins might turn that 4th into a 6th.

Of course we can sign players who were cut (Revis,Webb, Byrd) with no impact to the comp picks.

The comp picks would have to be announced first. It's more likely we would trade next year's 6th rounder, knowing we will have a compensatory pick. Or we could say we'll trade you our best or worst 4th round selection, whatever. Heck, free agency doesn't even end before the draft, so some of that could change by our signing a free agent after the draft.

Is there any doubt now...Jake Butt will be a Cowboy? You darn well know we might trade all four of our comp picks to get that TE.

I was under the impression you cant trade comp pics.

They announced last year that starting in 2017 you can trade comp picks. But they must be awarded first. But as has been addressed, trade the lowest pick in that round.
If a comp pick or a regular pick, it can be made.

You'd actually offer the normal pick for the next round since comp picks are at the end

There were players in the 2018; we just didn't know how to pick them.

The philosophy has changed since then. We'll find gems in that draft just as we do this one and did the year before and the year before.

I doubt you could trade a "projected" draft pick before they've been awarded.
