Can the Cowboys trade next year's comp picks now?

I don't think you have to specific the pick if it's conditional. A conditional pick could be a pick in 2018, 2019 or beyond.

But I don't think we need to be trading picks next year, anticipating compensatory picks. We don't know what our record will be. We could be picking at the top of each round.

I'd prefer to trade down since this is a deep draft at the positions we need (DE, S, CB, TE).

Trade down from what? We have one of the worst value picks if each round.

I would think so. I consider 1-4 spots where you get starters or significant contributors. Having an extra 4th can't hurt. :)

I don't know if you're guaranteed a player on the 4th round but I have no problem getting another 4th......but what am I trading out of? Am I trading down from possible first year starter? Just depends who's there.

I think this is the right answer. You work around the pick not existing yet by stating a team gets the lowest pick of the round.
That seem logical. If you traded your lowest 4th rnd pick then you aren't technically trading something you don't have
That being the case it would seem to trade a 4th rnd comp you would need a regular 4th rnd pick I would think

I don't get why so many of you want to trade draft picks lol.
This years draft is better than next. Therefore would it not be to the Cowboys advantage to trade one of the 11 draft picks from next year to this year? They won't need 11 picks next year. If I were GM, I'd try to trade 2.

Archer says this....

The Cowboys actually could trade one of their projected 2018 compensatory picks in next month’s draft, but the gnashing of teeth over the team’s low-key approach to free agency this year could bring a return in the form of a low-cost starter from 2018-21 from the draft’s third day.

Anybody know if that's correct? Trading a pick that doesn't exist yet?
you can not trade comp picks...and you have no idea what they will be.

As I understand it, next years picks are generally devalued an entire round - and that is with the upside of possibly getting that unknown pick at the begin of the round. These are known to be end of round picks - so they will be devalued even more,

If we claim to want to build through the draft, not draft for need, etc, etc - this is the complete opposite move one would take to reach such objectives.
