Someone would just take their spot. People would just switch their love and hatred to the next team.
Not sure it would be that simple.

The Cowboys are a media and sports empire.

The Patriots barely bring in half of the profit the Cowboys do, and there is a huge drop off from them to #3.

One of them was the turkey day game. I bet if you look back through history the Cowboys turkey day game will almost always be the most watched game. It has nothing to do with the popularity of the Cowboys, its because its a holiday and more people are able to watch. You did notice that the Bears - Lions turkey day game was #2, right?
And whose idea and what team was the only team to play on Thanksgiving? Tex Schramm and the Dallas Cowboys took it when no other team wanted it. Only the Lions who were not getting anything out of it was playing on thanksgiving.

So did the NFL need the Cowboys or the Cowboys need the NFL to save Thanksgiving?

Jerry Jones has now made the Thanksgiving game a mini Super Bowl with halftime entertainment (Destiny's Child, keith Urban, Pittbull, etc.) and the philanthropic support of the Salvation Army that will be forever symbolized by Ezekiel Elliott jumping in the Red Kettle.

Most don't want to admit it but when the Cowboys are not winning consistently the NFL is not doing well in ratings and image consistently.

The NFL needs saving and Jerry Jones Dallas Cowboys are the team to do it. The Cowboys have had one consistent strength from the beginning....a Showman for a GM that can create and spin stories.

People still prefer to watch the NFL. The Super Bowl dwarfs the World Series and NBA Finals. Even really bad preseason football and the bad Pro Bowl have higher ratings than some of the other major sports playoff games.
