Looks like there is a clause in the CBA that allows it.
I guess maybe I just don't remember any player being forced to return money because of retirement.
Aikman retired and it put Dallas in a world of hurt because of the dead money which would seem to have to be his accelerated bonus.
Maybe health issue retirements are non-recoverable?
Perhaps it's an option but is rarely exercised. Maybe teams try and are denied. I just can't recall a team actually making it happen but I wouldn't file that away as something worth remembering so maybe I just can't recall. I don't think it's as easy saying "pay up" because all transactions have to go through the arbitration process or whatever.
I think the Patriots are still battling Hernandez's guarantees and that's about as clear cut as it gets.
Guess we'll see how it plays out. I don't expect it to be a simple request and that's that.
Both Ricky Williams and Barry Sanders had to pay back bonus money because they retired (early).
Also Aikman was released before he retired.
