Can we give Jerry credit for one thing?

He most definitely addressed where we were weakest, the secondary. First by keeping Hamlin on board, then the trade for Pacman, then acquiring what could end up being the best CB in the draft not to mention adding another guy that was projected to go as high as the late 2nd round.

We are light years ahead of where we were last year in the secondary, especially if Pacman gets allowed back. Because of this, I have faith that by this time next year, we will be looking at a stellar receiving core as well.

true, I am still worried about the WR position, I was really hoping he would have pulled off the RW trade on draft day. It still may happen: one can dream:)

Yep, Jerry and Co. did right by us. I suspect there will be more of the same in 2009 considering one of our CB's and one of out S's could be leaving.

OBTW. Hamlin still has to sign, which i'm sure he will.

Man, not having enough quality defensive backs can get you beat in a hurry.

Jerry knows this.

I remember the year before Dallas' first Super Bowl under Jerry. The team had gotten shredded by Detroit the year before in the playoffs -- Scott Mitchell to Herman Moore, etc. It was obvious what Dallas needed and they drafted Kevin Smith and Darren Woodson the next April, then traded for Thomas Everett in September.

Of course, Jerry tried this again in 2000, but didn't quite have the same results.

Having enough cover guys is essential, especially now the way the game is played.

I think Jerry did what he could and tried to do more. He knows we are in the middle of a limited window and need to win now.

I remember that too, but it wasn't Scott Mitchell. In 1991 their QB was this skinny little twerp named Erik Kramer who carved us up like a Christmas turkey.

I remember this quite well because I had to get the score of the game shaved into one side of my head and the Lions logo on the other side and wasn't allowed to wear a cap for a day at work. I was bald 30 minutes after I got home that night.

Now if only Jerry could keep Roy of the field when a pass is thrown.

Yes. Earlier that year when they won I had to put a Lions bumper sticker on my car for 1 month. I got to take it off on Thanksgiving day. Then that sorry sap sucker quit making bets with me when we started to get really good. So I never got revenge.

These are not the stupidest stakes I ever wagered on the Cowboys. I am sad to say, but I won the stupidest wager.

You're right. How could I forget Erik Kramer?

He made such an impression on Dave Wannstedt that Wannstedt went after him and signed him after he got the Chicago Bears job.

Thomas Everett came in that next year and I remember thinking, if we had this guy last year, we'd have had a much better chance. Such a consumate pro. I really think he had a profound influence on Woodson too. It's too bad they were only backfield mates for 2 years.

I give JJ credit for a whole lot of things. He's the best owner in football and, even though there's a lot of disagreement about this, IMO he's turned himself into a pretty fine GM too.

We had two major weaknesses going into this draft. Secondary and running back. Even those who disagree with the people selected and traded for, would have to acknowledge that those positions are no longer weaknesses.

On a side note, I don't think we had a major weakness at WR even though I understand the arguments to the contrary. But consider that we were an injury to Glenn away from being downright scary. Owens and Witten are powerful weapons in a receiving arsenal.

The concern at WR IMO is that we are getting older every year at the position; not that we did not have the weapons to succeed. You don't set numerous franchise passing records with a weak WR group. Also I like the optimism I kept hearing from the coaches last year about Stanback.

I do agree we need to take every opportunity to get better at the position, though. That's only smart.
