wow. that's one long link.

a friend of mine from college posted this on facebook. after college i went away and of course lost track of a lot of those friends but many stayed behind and grew up living the western oklahoma life and love it. after i added her on facebook recently i found out she had leukemia and spends about $7k a month on medications. she's asked people to sign this and i know i've also had this come through my life and family, so it's a bit personal for me also. but if you could take the time to sign this petition against the high cost of cancer drugs, many will appreciate it. if you can share among your social networking that would be great, otherwise, thank you for at least reading.

will do

Sadly, if she was here illegally, she could get all the help she wanted at no cost to her.
Just sayin'. Med system is still screwed up.

Not true. Illegals only get ER help, where you cannot turn anyone away without getting sued.

My comment was partially tongue-n-cheek.

But it isn't only ER. You can have a baby delivered (in a non-emergency situation) "on the house" as well. Just in the dallas area alone, I think that number is in the 1000s of births per year.
I'm sure you know that already though.

Anyway, I'm way off the topic at this point.
it's a good cause and I signed it

If she has insurance, at least 80% of the drug costs will be covered. If not, she can get into the ACA system, and get future costs covered.
If she is already broke from this, can get into the Medicaid system and get 100% coverage.

This scenario plays out hundreds of times daily in our country, and it is extremely rare for cancer meds and treatment to be withheld due to lack of funds.
But it's also true that many of these families do go broke in the process, especially when it's the major earner who gets sick. Every major hospital has resource managers who routinely work through this -- they can supply advice and contact information for all of the local, state, and national authorities.

Good luck and good health.

You're correct, but the majority of ER visits turn out to not be urgent -- still have to be treated.
Consider any impending delivery that has an unforeseen complication and death that was turned away; the hospital and doc would be fried.

the trouble with tongue and cheek comments is how deeply they can be based in reality. but that could quickly move this topic where i'd prefer it didn't go.

i appreciate the input very much - thank you! i know my mom racked up quite a bill due to cancer and when we lost her, it put my dad into bankruptcy and he was a hospital admin for 25+ years so he knows how to get around as best that can be done for the most part.

again, thank you. all info helps.

Signed....
Some of the comments listed were sickening.

Saving lives shouldn't be big business but sadly it is.

I've just gotten to the point where I don't care about the individual whining sessions people do in the comments section. pretty pathetic in most I've been to and most take advantage of the anon nature of comments to just be as stupid as humanly possible just to get a reaction.

thank you.
