New orleans should be spending that cash soon. They have some players coming up for deals, like will smith who will get a bunch!!! new orleans makes me nervous with all that cap room and all that talent.

thanks for the post adam.

The reason why the Saints have all that cap room is quite simply, Tom Benson and that organization DON'T have the cash to spend to begin with.(and living in post-Katrina isn't making it any easier on them either) Maybe living in a small market is hurting them, I don't know.

They did sign another DE(Bobby McCray) from Jax to a long-term deal, so it looks like Smith could be traded(to Philly for Lito won't surprise me).

So what is Kansas City's excuse? Hunt certainly has the money and they aren't exactly a small market.

Just a guess, but they aren't using up much cap room for the highly paid positions: QB, DE, CB, and possibly LT. Their roster is actually pretty bare and as a result they'll be starting a lot of rookies.

I like right were we are. At this point in the off-season, with the talent and expectations we have, bottom 10 in cap room is where we should be.

Imagine being a Cardinal or Raider fan. WTH are those teams paying for?

On the opposite side of the coin, WTH are the Saints, Eagles, Chargers and Jags doing that far under the cap?

If I were a fan of a team at the top of the list, I would be pretty angry.

Depends on how it's spent. Ideally the goal is to spend as close to the cap limit each year because theoretically the team *should* be better because they are spending more money on talent than say a team that's $20 million under the cap.

But it doesn't work that way. If you're $30 million under the cap and making great deal after great deal, then I'd be ecstatic. I guess if you're close to the cap a team can be credited for "trying" but I'm more interested in my team being right than putting effort forth. In Dallas' lean years they were getting just below the cap, but they weren't making good personnel contract decisions. After awhile fans get sick of "trying" and want a team that gets things right.

I've been saying the same thing - if they get that defense squared around - that team has scary potential. They can lay up some points.

Thank you adamjt13, for your helpful debit and credit cap data. I may differ with you on the crediblity of statistics on implied overall performance assessment of a player, i.e., Roy Williams, but you have no peers of providing up to date relevant financial information on our team and players.

Also after reading Kevin Burnett's blog analysis on Roy Williams the other day I am easing up on thinking the worst of Roy in terms of field performances. I hope the coaching staff, particularly Campo can get Roy back to playing at a high level and also hope that Roy helps himself by better preparing for opponents.

They consider themselves a small market and want to rebuild thru the draft not free agency.

I think so. In any case his son took over as majority owner.

They are in complete rebuilding mode. The Jared Allen trade proves that. Frankly, I told everyone around here I was surprised they gave Larry Johnson that big contract last year and they should have traded him.

Just a year ago Carl Peterson (GM) and Herm Edwards swore up and down they were reloading thru the draft not rebuilding via free agency. Well, they were just trying to sell tickets. But yes I would be pissed also if we were so cheap.

How in the heck did the skins get so far under the cap, I understand the June 1 credit but man at end of last season they looked in cap hell as usual they find a way out of it...

Well, iirc, the only FA that the Skins addressed this offseason was Todd Collins, who isn't exactly getting Peyton Manning money.

They restructured a few deals (again, iirc, this is just off the top of my head) including Cooleys and released Brunnel, which opened a lot of cap room, presumably for rookies and a Chad Johnson trade, but that fell apart.

There really isn't "Cap hell" anymore, with the rate in which the cap has gone up in the past 3 years or so. At worst, you just can't sign Free Agents, which is what happened to the 'Skins this year.

Arn't teams obligated to spend 85% of some number? If it were $115 million, are those with over $20 million in violation of this requirement?

They can have a larger cap space because of the credits they get for pushing cap space over from past years, etc.
