With Akin Ayodele most likely playing end in the nickel, and spears probably moving inside, that clearly means that this is Carpenters opportunity.

I think he is going to get some serious playing time to spell Ayodele at inside linebacker. I mean Parcells clearly isn't going to play Ayodele the entire game, it just isn't conducive as parcells would say to him being effective.

If this works out, maybe we'll see even more rotation with Ayodele being a standard in the nickel at end. He has experience playing defensive end in the 4-3, so hopefully this works out well.

I don't know if I even want him playing if he's not ready.

If he's ready fine, but to rush him in there just so a few fans stop prematurely proclaiming him a bust isn't too bright IMO.

Heck I just want him to dress on game day. I'm not asking for the moon here.

Bobby played a fair amount of end at OU...at least in passing situations.

Ayodele is probably just going to spell Ellis some in the nickel. That really shouldn't affect Carpenter at all.

Parcells said some thing like that a few days ago. He said Ellis is plying well but he would like to get him more rest. So you are probably right.

Bottom line is, Ellis is not getting pressure on the QB consistantly, and no way they're taking Ware out, so we need pressure from our ends and Ayodele is the chosen one I guess.

I'm not sure I agree with this, Ellis has had as much (if not more) pressure than anyone else on the team.

Both Ellis and Ware need to be spelled more often. This is probably a key reason why they've been ineffective at times.

This means that it's important for Burnett and Ayodele to step up. Burnett in spelling Ware and Ellis on the outside linebacker spots in the 3-4, and Ayodele spelling Ellis and Ware in the 4-3 at the defensive end spots. That said Carpenter needs to spell Ayodele, if he is going to start at inside linebacker in the 3-4, and spell in the nickel.

Parcells simply said he would like to get him more rest. I wouldn't read any thing into that. Its a long season.

I love Ellis, but if we're being honest, there isn't consistant pressure.. Pressure, but not consistant.

Why is there this urgency to play Carpenter? It's not like we are hurting at the position.

If he's not ready, he's not ready.

Let him workout in the offseason and become bradiejames v2.0.

Carpenter opportunity? I would just be happy to see this guy make a special team assist or he77 I would take a holding penality on #54

What do you mean rest?? Shawn Merriman doesn't rest, heck I don't even think he sleeps....I bet he works outs 24/7, except on game days. Dang we screwed up!!! :bang2:

:) Sorry, just had to. I'm thinking some on here will start using Merriman's name in those Chuck Norris rants!!

I think we are hurting at OLB. Ellis is too slow to play contain LB in the 3-4 and is an average pass rusher right now. Put Burnett and Carp in there, see what some athletes can do.

Hmm. I'd think that any time taken away from any LB is going to go to Burnett.

It's not the players folks or the talent level - it's the scheme. We're playing an outdated version of the 3-4 - just b/c you play a 3-4 does not mean you become Blitzburg. Pittsburgh is extremely creative in what they do and they bring the house quite often - us on the other hand play a base 3-4 modeled after what many Colleges did in the 70's! and then later the Giants.
Our version of the 3-4 is quite Simply Vanilla. We do not blitz enough and we never ever! run Blitz.

Correct me if I am wrong. Defense whether 3-4 or 4-3 is not solely about creatively blitzing the quarterback. Defensive play and scheming is not one dimensional. It is also about effectively covering and smothering the opponent's offense by stopping the run and minimizing pass plays.
