Just got finished watching 'Short Cuts' and wanted to see how well Carpenter played against Tony Gonzalez, (per Wade's Monday Press Conference). True, he was physical with Gonzalez and he couldn't get open. The replay is on tomorrow night @ 9:30pm EST on NFL Network.

Carpenter has been playing pretty decent, honestly. he's been placed on my "maybe he's not as incredibly terrible as I thought he was" list.

Unfortunately for with Carpenter, as good as he is on Pass defense, he is pretty poor at Run D. At least if he has someone blocking him. He is one of those pure 4-3 LBs, who has to have good DTs or DL keeping OL or even a good FB off him.

He is just not good at shedding blocks from what I have seen and can't take on blockers well. But man, he can cover though.

he is horrendous on defense, period. Atlanta does not score on that drive in the 3rd quarter if Carpenter so much as lays a finger on Snelling during that huge run.

Whatever Bobby Carpenter is, I don't think he is a Cowboy next season.

We will likely trade him to Uncle Bill in South Beach before the draft.

Carpenter>Gonzales:confused:

No. the young Gonzales > the old Gonzales. KC let him go bye-bye for a reason. But still, it was nice to see that Carpenter could cover him.

Carpenter was apparently lined up against Gonzalez on that play and failed to shed. But please ignore all of his good plays to point out his one bad one and call him "horrendous."

I'll never understand why fans can't give players credit when they deserve it. Got to keep the hate fired up, I guess.

Would surprise me because Jason Williams and Stephen Hodge haven't had a chance to prove they would be worthy replacements.

If one of those guys stepped up strong next preseason, maybe, but Carp's playing well enough to make it difficult to supplant him. Someone is going to have to prove his equal in pass coverage, which could be hard, while proving better at rushing the passer and run support, which could be easy.

To add to what your saying about Carpenter,he can't navigate in traffic at all even if he isn't engaged with a blocker. He seems to just get lost in the shuffle for some reason,a lack of physicality or just no instincts.

I consider myself to be fairly optimistic and positive about the team, but I absolutely cannot stand Carp's play. Being a former LB myself, I abhor his finesse style. Carp just seems disinterested in the run game, he does not go all out (like he seems to do in coverage) when it comes to scraping off blocks (no matter if its a RB, FB, TE or OL) or punishing ball carriers.

He lacks physicality and toughness, and for someone of his position, size and pedigree (first rounder) he disheartens me to the point of nausea.

I never played a down of organized competitive football in my life and it sickens me watching him go in goalline defense.

I do think he has "some" value, but boy is he eminently replaceable.

I'm usually in the same boat as you, but not with a first round draft pick that has been as bad as he has.

*sigh* My stomach get tied up in knots thinking about him on goal line, I scare the crap out of my kids & neighbors whenever I spot him in those packages. For the life of me, why doesn't the HC/DC or his defensive assistants see how tissue soft he is in those situations?

So that keeps you from acknowledging when he does a good job against a player who has been one of the keys to Atlanta's success this season?

I agree with calling it like it is on Carpenter as far as his finesse play, his struggles against the run and pass rushing, but I don't understand why we can't give him credit for what he does well.

We seem to be so blinded by the facts that he's not physical and wasn't worthy of a first-round pick that we can't praise him for doing a good job without throwing a barb at him.

I don't care what my feelings are about a player on this team, if they do well then they deserve for it to be said ... as I did in creating a thread about Pat Watkins.

Put the hate aside and give the man his due.

The first-round pick doesn't matter to me anymore, it's whether he helps this team. He helped MY team beat the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, and deserves credit for it.

If he plays poorly, he deserves to be called out on it. When he plays well, we seem to fall back on: "Oh, he was a first-round pick, so he's supposed to do that. Let's instead focus on the fact that we wasted that pick, or that he's not this or he's not that."

Who cares about the past, what's he doing for us now? And if people will just look at that, he's doing a pretty nice job as a coverage linebacker.

He's always been pretty good against the pass. It's against the run where he struggles.

I do agree that they shouldn't put him in there in goal-line situations. He gets turned way too easily and doesn't bring the hammer some others might.

This is a case where you've got to understand the player's strengths and weaknesses and use them accordingly. The Cowboys know Carp's a finesse player, so they should be smarter about using him in those situations.
