I'm not so sure about the credibility of the source, but wanted to share this.

Cash-strapped Cowboys may not be able to sign DeMarcus Ware

January 15, 1:45 PM
by Dan Telvock, Dallas Cowboys Examiner

DeMarcus Ware, the Dallas Cowboys best player who recorded 20 sacks this year, is in his final year of his rookie contract.

It is anticipated that the Dallas Cowboys will have about $10 million in cap space for 2009. Executives of the team have already said that signing Ware to a long-term contract is a priority, but no one has set a path of how this can get done.

Talks of releasing Terrell Owens do not help the cap space problem or assist the Cowboys in freeing up cash this year to sign Ware. By next year, Ware becomes a restricted free agent and teams would love to give up draft picks for this beast.

So, how do the Cowboys sign Ware, who is likely going to require the largest contract ever for a defensive player. To compare, Jared Allen's $74 million, six year deal with the Vikings is tops in the NFL. Ware will likely bring a contract in the $12-million to $13-million a year range.

The Cowboys have numerous picks--although no first rounder---in the coming draft and have three immediate needs: backup quarterback, safety and offensive line depth. It is unlikely the Cowboys can do much in the draft this year with $10 million if they plan to sign Ware this year. Either Jerry Jones needs to restructure some contracts or the Cowboys could be risking losing their best player.

We're going to have almost $10 million in free cap space. The author is wrong.

Plus, don't some fairly large contracts come off the books next year?

Out of curiosity, why would Jerry Jones make the case that the author is attempting to make on Norm Hitzges Show the week after the Philadelphia loss if there wasn't some truth to it?

Does Jerry Jones covet Terrell Owens so much that he would deliberately make a false claim?

His point is that since the Cowboys have " only " 10 million dollars of cap space, they won't be able to sign Ware to his contract, plus sign the picks, plus tender the restricted free agents.

A) he has absolustely NO clue how much the Cowboys' draft pool is going to be because the Cowboys haven't picked anybody yet.

B) He has absolutely NO clue how Ware's contract is going to be structured and how much is going to count against the salary cap in '09 IF it does at all ( he could easily sign an extension that starts in 2010 while playing under his current contract. ) Oh, and by the way, don't discount the posibility that Ware's current contract has a big enough base salary in '09 that his cap hit can be converted to bonus + base salary for the new contract, which would mean that the '09 cap hit wouldn't be affected too much ( maybe 2-3 millions more ).

c) He has absolutely NO clue what the Cowboys are going to do with contracts like Roy Williams (SS), which, if terminated, would free up more room.

d) He has absolutely NO clue.

Dumb columnist. Whatever Wares salary is next year goes against the cap if he isnt extended first off. If he is it may go against Wares contract depending on how it's structured. Most players would prefer the raise sooner than later and wont be any different here. We wont have to restructure any contracts unless it's coaching.
