For anyone following at all, this is no surprise

Yes, extending his contact without cutting him would still be 3.02M against the cap PLUS the amount of the new contract for 2015.

People get worked up about dead money, but the money hits the cap at some point with or without the player on the roster.

Free is one fifth of the best offensive line in the NFL. I am not thrilled about this. As if you can replace him with anyone. I want him back.

He's the veteran leader of the group but in terms of talent he's pretty marginal. Easily the least talented of the five starters and I would like to think Tyron Smith has enough experience under his belt to take over that leadership role, if not Travis Frederick.

It might have been important to have a guy like that around when Smith was a first year starting LT and Frederick a rookie C, but that role should be diminished as those guys gain experience in the league.

So 3M this year. My guess is they will negotiate with him and if I were him I would test the market.

Well except the Cowboys gave up less sacks and had a higher rushing average when Parnell started in Free's place.

Spending 4 million on a player not on the roster isn't something to casually dismiss as a non-issue.
They're not spending money. It's the cap hit for money already spent (i.e. dead money).

I mean, sure it would be nice to have the cap hit disappear, but dead money against the cap is hardly anything unusual.

I think Leary is a tick worse right now. More physical ability but he can be out quicker or out techniqued. Free not as strong but after that one year really got better.

Considering what he would have cost if the Cowboys hadn't renegotiated his contract the damage would have been far worse.

Now if you want to knock the original contract-- so be it.

We're going to have a tough call on Leary next season. I think I'd rather lock down one of the vet RTs we know this year and get a young OG replacement from the middle rounds somewhere on the roster this season. I don't like the idea of a big expensive extension for Leary, but I think he's going to be in line for one from somebody.

$3.98 million salary cap charge:banghead:

It happens, with every team. You want to minimize that as much as you can, but with contracts being what they are, inevitably things are going to be redone, and in some cases you save, others you owe. In Free's case, it's actually both.

The actual money spent means nothing to me. It's the cap charge that I care about.
Same here. Like I said, it would be nice if the cap hit magically became 0, but I don't see this dead money as any sort of unusually high amount.

We will make up for it by giving Dez a lot more cash money this year than his cap hit will be. :-D

It appears his cap hit this year is 3M which considering the alternatives is great. Another 1M next year. Spotrac is generally pretty decent info.

While I wouldn't bet a plug nickel either way, I don't think they draft an OT unless one falls in their laps. That's assuming we don't lose Free and Parnell.

Yeah he has to take a big step. Leary is a fine player but he has trouble dealing with quickness and elite tackles. too top heavy.

Fletcher Cox abused him, but that isn't terribly worrying. Cox abused EVERYONE. But Leary is clearly the weak link in the line.
