We're going to have a tough call on Leary next season. I think I'd rather lock down one of the vet RTs we know this year and get a young OG replacement from the middle rounds somewhere on the roster this season. I don't like the idea of a big expensive extension for Leary, but I think he's going to be in line for one from somebody.

Unless he becomes elite next season the money for guards is generally pretty low. At his current rate he's probably a 2 - 3.5 kind of guy. His knee would likely keep the money or guarantees low.

Yeah he has to take a big step. Leary is a fine player but he has trouble dealing with quickness and elite tackles. too top heavy.

Fletcher Cox abused him, but that isn't terribly worrying. Cox abused EVERYONE. But Leary is clearly the weak link in the line.

Leary had one bad game all year that I can recall, everyone has a bad day. Leary is turning into a great pulling guard and he anchors very well. Some of Murray's best runs this year were blown open by Leary, especially pulling off right tackle. He's very physical at the point of attack on those runs plays.

LOL people are making too much of a big deal about his game with Cox, the 2nd game was basically a draw, and Leary destroyed Watt.

Draft Offensive Line and Running Back early in the draft, use free agency to rebuild the defensive line this year.

Draft defensive linemen in the draft next year.

Or resign Parnell, and use free agency for RB. And use draft for best player available.

I think Leary is a tick worse right now. More physical ability but he can be out quicker or out techniqued. Free not as strong but after that one year really got better.

Part of that is the scheme. They cheat the Center and RG to the right to make it easier for the RT and the end result is that Leary doesn't get much help and is often on a island like an OT.

The C anchors the OL. You can't move him as he goes where the ball is. Everything else lines on him including the QB obviously. You can only spread the linemen so much without stretching the gaps too much. Brown spread the OL in the 50s which led eventually to the Flex and before to the Mike. Brown developed the beginnings of zone blocking. Nowadays too much gap would be split right away.

I thought it voided automatically as long as he was on the roster on a certain date. Suh has a similar situation with the Lions.

Something about 23 days or so before the new league begins on March 10th, but it was automatic on the 15th

February 15

1. This is the deadline for the Dallas Cowboys to pick up the option on defensive tackle Henry Melton's contract for an additional three years worth $24 million. If the option is exercised, Melton's $9 million 2015 base salary becomes fully guaranteed on the first day of the 2015 league year (March 10), which would make him a candidate to lower his $9,308,843 cap number through a restructure. $8,382,311 of cap room will be gained if Dallas passes on the option.

2. The 2015 and 2016 contract years of Dallas Cowboys tackle Doug Free void. He will become an unrestricted free agent when the 2015 league year starts. Dallas is going to have a $3.98 million salary cap charge from the bonus proration associated with Free's 2015 and 2016 contract years.

It appears his cap hit this year is 3M which considering the alternatives is great. Another 1M next year. Spotrac is generally pretty decent info.

It's now 3.98m this year since his contract voided

Considering he was paid 24m over the last 4 year and was only charged for 20m against the cap, it is a fair deal.

Dallas needed those lower cap numbers in the past when the overall cap was lower more than they need it now when the cap is much higher. Cap in 2011 was 120m and is now 142m

It's based around the RG lining up a few inches towards the RT. It's not enough that you would easily notice it, but it's enough that it impedes the outside rusher from beating Free to the inside. This allows Free to over set to the outside and gives him and advantage. They have the Center favor helping to the right. Obviously, the Center can't always block right, but most things in football are tendencies, not absolutes. When people say the Cowboys committed to the run in 2014, it just means that ran more. They didn't start running the ball on every snap. When I say they cheat right, it does not mean on every snap.
I first noticed it when Waters played RG in 2013. The way Bernadeau played before and after the few games that Waters played was different in regards to this issue.

The other thing apart from any alignment is that the Center often has the option to help block either Guard. When it's optional, Fred helps to the right. There were a number of snaps where Martin didn't even have a primary block because Fred had the guy on that side. This often allowed Martin to get off the initial block with Fred that man and get over to give more help to the RT.

Sign Free and Murray and use the rest of FA and the draft to rebuild the defense THIS year.

I misunderstood you. I was talking about alignment not blocking options. Each player is responsible for their set and they will modify it at times. I'd have to look at the play more than I do to say much about blocking schemes. When I looked previously I didn't notice much bias but I don't think I look at tape as much as you do.
