From a Cowboys news release ...
"I don't know that I've ever met anyone who loves the NFL, or cares about the NFL, more than John Madden. As a friend, I know that John's respect and passion for the sport will be the two elements of his legacy that matter the most to him. His imprint and impact on our game were powerful and meaningful. His influence on the sport was felt by everyone -- the guys in the equipment room, the players, the coaches, the owners, and most importantly, the fans. He's going out on top -- as the best we have -- and the best we have ever had."

Pat Summerall's Wakeup Call
Posted by CBS11

Pat Summerall says he was awakened from his slumber at 11:30 last night with a surprise phone call. It was his longtime broadcast partner John Madden calling. He wanted to tell Pat before the announcement became public today that he is retiring from broadcasting.

Pat says it was an emotional phone call, one in which Madden told him that the best years of his life were spent working with him.

You'll hear from Pat tonight on CBS-11 and TXA-21 Sports.

I can't think of an NFL w/o Madden

it's like Christmas without Santa :(
You do know that if the 't' was moved back a slot and the 'n' was moved forward two slots that 'Santa' would become...

...oh nevermind.

It seemed like every game the Cowboys played in the early 90's madden and Summerall were doing the game. I used to love listening to Madden talk about our big lineman and how good they were - he used to gush over LA, Nate and Big E....

I can still hear madden talking about Erik Williams "Pressing Big Ted Washington into the carpet" in the 1993 playoff game against the 49ers....hurting Washington and putting him out for the game.

Those were some of the best days of my life watching professional sports and I will always remember and cherish those times.

I said a while back that I have a friend who works for Sunday Night Football as a broadcast engineer. He told me last year that it was expected that this past season would be his last one. My friend told me that he really struggled the past few years and even had his good friend John Robinson in the booth with him to help him organize and feed him info for use in the broadcast. He suggested to me that some suspect he has early signs of dementia.

It's a sad day for football. I always loved Madden.

yeah, I suspected that, he would kind of ramble on

I had visions of him last year talking, and them having to touch his arm to politely get him to stop

Sounds close to what I was told...'cept I heard it from a cameraman who I went to school with. He only said there were some "ailments" he was struggling with over the last year or so. Perhaps it is Alzheimers he was speaking of...kinda would make sense. Who knows, tho. i'll miss the guy tho.

Those were the glory days- Madden and Pat just made watching the Cowboys so much fun. I don't think they've had fun being commentators since then.

The 90's Cowboys and John Madden are inseparable, in my mind. Those were the early days of Fox Sports, the music, the big 4 o'clock and playoff games.

There's a lot of hate for Madden around these parts, I can never figure out why. Let's be honest - he loved the 90's Cowboys and our offensive line almost as much as Brett Favre. (I did say *almost*).

I have a question...what happens with madden the video game? going forward from 2010. is he gonna still be on the game commentating. just wondering...or is it gonna be like when players retire, hes just gonna be out of it from now on.....(commentating) assuming the game wont change name.

The combination of Madden and Summerall has not been matched, imho. They were the best at explaining the nuances of the game without getting full of themselves. I have not seen that kind of chemistry between commentators in any sport since or at any other time.
