Cowboys coach Wade Phillips told the media last night that he expects the "grind" of practice to set in today. The squad has two today. The team is in shorts and shoulder pads this morning.

Aug 5 2009 | 10:24:38 am
Cowboys special teams coach Joe DeCamillis has been very creative in his teaching this camp. DeCamillis has his wedge group of blockers, mainly offensive and defensive linemen, practicing catching kickoffs in case the ball is kicked short. DE Stephen Bowen has a future as a returner

Aug 5 2009 | 10:32:09 am
The Cowboys signed their final draft pick, OT Robert Brewster, this morning. Brewster injured his pectoral muscle in the offseason workouts and has yet to practice. To make room for Brewster on the roster, the Cowboys released S Jerome Carter.

Aug 5 2009 | 11:00:47 am
Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett is doing his best to get all his weapons on the field at the same time. In the first play of 7-on-7, Garrett had RB's Marion Barber, Felix Jones and Tashard Choice as part of the personnel package.

Aug 5 2009 | 11:08:50 am
Last season, the left guard position for the Cowboys was a mess with the injury to Kyle Kosier. In this camp, the backups have once again struggled. OG Montrae Holland looks slow footed and is struggling with quick movements of the rushers.

Aug 5 2009 | 11:22:23 am
Cowboys WR Roy Williams and QB Tony Romo have picked up where they left off yesterday. Williams, working against CB Mike Mickens, has fought through presses and found space in his routes. Romo has delivered the ball on time and with accuracy.

Aug 5 2009 | 11:28:00 am
Cowboys rookie QB Stephen McGee needs to do a better job with his mental clock. In team drills, he holds the ball way too long waiting for something to break.

Aug 5 2009 | 11:47:53 am
Cowboys backup QB Jon Kitna has been very steady today. He has done a solid job of handling the blitz by checking the protection and getting rid of the ball quickly. He appears to be an upgrade over QB Brad Johnson.

Aug 5 2009 | 4:40:55 pm
The afternoon practice has begun for the Cowboys with full pads the order of the day. The morning session was devoted to the two-minute drill and its execution. The offense was clicking and the defense looks to be still needing some work.

Aug 5 2009 | 5:18:51 pm
You can tell that these Cowboys defensive backs respect Miles Austin's speed. He is the one WR they play off from and try to adjust on him as he runs his route.

Aug 5 2009 | 5:26:22 pm
In a physical 9-on-7 session, Cowboys FB Asaph Schwapp tried to dig LB Stephen Hodge out of the hole as a lead blocker. There was a crack at the point of attack, with neither player giving an inch.

Aug 5 2009 | 5:41:29 pm
Cowboys WR Roy Williams is on a roll catching the ball this afternoon. He has connected not only with QB Tony Romo but Jon Kitna as well on several "pitch and catch" passes.

Aug 5 2009 | 5:48:07 pm
In the two-minute drill, Cowboys QB Tony Romo started off with two quick strikes to TE Jason Witten. But the third effort to WR Roy Williams down the middle of the field was high and tipped into the air. S DeAngelo Smith was in position for the INT.

Aug 5 2009 | 5:53:08 pm
Same song second verse for Cowboys QB Tony Romo in the two-minute drill. Romo moved the squad smartly down the field into the "red zone," but a pass to TE Jason Witten across the middle was high and picked off by S Patrick Watkins to end the drive.

Aug 5 2009 | 6:04:04 pm
The Cowboys' offense had four cracks at the defense in the two-minute drill this afternoon and were unable to put any points on the board. Two drives ended in interceptions (both on Tony Romo passes) and two ended on downs.

The Montrae Holland comments are kind of surprising... Hopefully he'll come along as camp goes on.

Holland is really disappointing me. This is not what I expected at all from him. At the time I was in favor of the trade to get him. Now I'm not so sure.

No wonder Denver was willing to get rid of Holland. They say he was too big for Shannahan, but I thought he would fit in just fine with our big lineman, but apparently he's coming along too slowly. It's a shame because he looked good in the Pittsburgh game last season before he got injured.

Either he's struggling badly or our defensive pass rush is that good. Holland looked like an all out scrapper last season that could have easily moved into the starting rotation.

He might be getting worn out from the two a days.

There's still a whole training camp left.

It's not so long ago (literally a few days) that everyone was saying Romo and Roy wouldn't work out because they aren't connecting on a few passes.

Holland doesn't strike me as the kinda guy that's ever had a great, or even very good, training camp. The lineman are impossible to grade in training camp. Not sure why so many people even try to do so.

Roy Williams good day was due mostly to poor performance of Mike Jenkins, RW flat out owned Jenkins. IMO Scandrick is the man who should be starting, he is a scapper, plays tight and he will hit, Scandrick shows so much heart and just good ol' football instincts. Jenkins is just missing something, not agressiveness at all. I thought Deangelo Smith had a good practice and Mickens looked lost, but so do most of the rookies DBs.

Also Stephen Mcgree looked good during warmups, but is terrible in live action, and after seeing the WR first hand, I think the cowboys are in good shape. If you have the opportunity to go to TC, do it, its well worth the time.

Kudos to Sam Hurd, that guy stays late and signs autographs for just about every Fan there.

You must not have been watching the other days when Jenkins was shutting down Roy.

Please, Roy has been beating Jenkins as much as he has Scandrick. I don't know where you are pulling this "lack of agressiveness" from.

Actually, I've read that it was Mickens who was getting abused by Roy. I don't recall seeing Jenkins name in relation to Roy's "good" day.

Jenkins better pick it up or will lose starting job to Scandrick. I like scandrick too but wondering he may have too many PI calls.

Sam hurd always does that, last year in the Oxnard camp we arrived a bit late and practice was over , after screaming for everyone to sign , Sam who was signing on the opposing side close to the exit came back all the way to sign and pose for pix. Wish him all the best for this season. Poor guy lost a year!

The majority of Mickens and RW was in the morning practice, you expect that from a low round rookie up against a veteran #1 WR. In the afternoon, it was number 21 vs 11, Jenkins and RW were matched quit abit/ It was all RW

He will never be forgiven for the "missed tackle" in the Giants game.

Defensive Sexy.

Marshall Faulk actually picked out D to be the best in the NFC East...bet he's the only non-fan out there to do that. He says Wade will have the personnel optimized and attacking. He also said the SD defense dropped off a lot once he left, even before Merriman got hurt.

Choppy on the 6:00-8:00 show on 103.3 said either our defense is going to be really good or our offense is average, because in his opinion the defense has been pretty much dominating.

They're pretty straightforward and tend to actually discuss practice and the team without a bunch of BS, so I tend to believe it.

Seems like it changes from practice to practice. When I was there last weekend, the offense completely dominated.

Wade mentioned that it goes based on what is being installed that day.

Defense may install some things and beats up on the offense. Offense adjusts.

Then the offense installs some things and just rolls on the defense.

I know, most people have said what you guys have said. Just reporting. :)

They were saying that they thought in these type practices, the D often pulls up more than is sometime obvious (on potential sacks, tackles, etc.), but the O-line could be doing the same thing.

I do think that facing what we know is at least one of the best pass rush teams in the league can only help our O when it comes to picking up blitzes from the Iggs and Giants.
