Bengals: Chad promises gags, fines and a 'monster' year

Receiver, humble no more, says if he scores in Week 1, 'you will laugh for a lifetime.'

GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Like the central Kentucky weather, Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson is heating up — in more ways than one.

"I'm going back to the old '05 Chad — the talking, the celebrating, the getting fined — all that," Johnson said during a recent break at training camp. "It's going to be a very entertaining, but productive, got-to-get-to-the-playoffs season. I want to carry the load. I'm going to make sure we get it done."

Last year, Johnson became the first Bengal to lead the league in receiving yards in a season with 1,369. Nevertheless, head coach Marvin Lewis and wide receivers coach Mike Sheppard challenged him to get better.

They point to Johnson's final three games — a combined 10 catches for 122 yards and no touchdowns — as proof that there's room for improvement.

"It was brought to my attention my whole game needs work, regardless of the numbers I put up," Johnson said. "They basically said, 'What can we do to continue to push someone who's already self-motivated?' They pushed all the right buttons. It put two unbelievably big chips on my shoulders and an enormous monkey on my back. Therefore, you've created a bigger beast and a bigger animal than what you've already had. This is going to be a ridiculously monster season."

The four-time Pro Bowler harnessed his emotion last season. He believes it held him back.

"I tried to change," he said. "I tried to be quiet. I tried not talking, playing what the outside world would call the humble role. This year, I'm going to play what the outside world would call the arrogant role. I call it confidence. Me being me, It's tough to walk the line between arrogance and humility. But I do back it up with my play, except for the last few weeks of the (2006) season.

"It's stupid to say. Some people aren't going to like it. But I set money aside (for fines). I did it in 2005. This is a year to entertain everyone around the world. Week 1, if I touch the end zone, you will laugh for a lifetime. Marvin might sit me down for the next game. But you will laugh."

Good, I hope he is just himself rather than what the NFL wants him to be. Whether the NFL likes it or not, he bring a lot of positive attention to the NFL.

what a team guy...
You know what though? I really like this guy. He does crack me up. Most TD celebrations I can't stand. TO depositing the football in the Salvation Army bucket last year was okay. I thoroughly enjoy this guy because he's so danged funny.

I'm with you. I've always been a Chad Johnson fan. When TO does things like he does, it irks me, but something about Chad just makes the words 'all in good fun' come across my head.

Now if it costs him a game, then I'm not for it, which it shouldn't. Celebrations are funny, and entertaining, just don't take too long to do them that's all.

I promise to watch all the Cowboys games this year while I drink beer, eat hot wings and burp every 10-15 minutes. Gonna be a good time.

Johnson can do whatever he wants, he does not play for the Cowboys. Our guys I hope they use their brain and avoid stupid 15 yarders that could be very costly.

Thankfully that was the only time he did something like that. I know some find it funny and entertaining but 1 person’s action can cost the team. I want guys to be fired up and celebrate but knowingly doing something that you know is going to cost your team is downright stupid. I respect Johnson ability to play this game but stupidity can cost you games

I also like Chad Johnson and his celebration antics. Makes me chuckle. I find it odd though that TO could do the same celebration and people would hate it. Personally, I think it's from the "Star" incident. I know for me, I still haven't let that completely go.

Not sure if many realize it, but that drop in the Salvation Army bucket was huge. I imagine it would probably fetch far more at an auction than most of us could afford to drop in the bucket. Especially if he signed it later. Made my respect for him increase a great deal.

We've been going back and forth over this for a while now Dooms, and my point of it is, it should't be a penalty. The league should take their thumbs out of their a****.

im thinking if he lights it up and is a real character on tv, he'll make loads more in endorsements than the amounts he gets fined.

But it is and since that is the reality of if then it is stupid for a player to announce ahead of time he is going to do something that is going to cost his team. On a TD Johnson may have caught it but it took others for it to happen yet he wants to act like this is all about him and draw the attention to himself? Sorry I don't get that. The league allows player to celebrate but he is putting on a 1 man show in a game that is supposed to be about team
