Dallas Cowboys legend Charles Haley endorses the 'Boys defense and will be "disappointed" if his former team does not win the Super Bowl.
The Hall of Fame inductee was asked about his expectations for the Cowboys this year while at the Texas Motor Speedway over the weekend.
“I told Jerry what I’ll tell you,” Haley said referring to owner/GM Jerry Jones, via the Dallas Morning News. “If they don’t take it to the house this year, I’ll be disappointed.”
Haley played for the 'Boys from 1992 to 1996 and won three Super Bowls with the franchise. He also had two more championships before with the 49ers, so he knows a little bit about the big game.
As for what he expects to see in the Cowboys this year, he said the defense has improved greatly. And it sounds like the sky could be the limit for the D.
“Teams are going to have to find a new wrinkle to attack the Dallas Cowboys’ defense,” Haley said. “Without injuries, I really think these guys got it.”

Can we just win the division first?

This is the crap that most concerns me. Don't put the cart four counties ahead of the horse.

Haley is only giving his opinion. I think Dallas should contend for the chance at a SB and if they don't make it then it will be a big disappointment.

I could see his influence on Lawrence last year and it's great to see him helping again this year.

That is a good point, and he has much more to work with this season in terms of young potential talent.

It certainly isn't shocking that an ex-NFL pass rusher thinks getting an improved pass rush will get the team to a super bowl. However, a lot more goes into making it there than that.

A good to great pass rush will indeed make a big difference, but an NFL season is such a fickle beast...

We can assume nothing. To say they should be in the Super Bowl is assuming an awful lot.

I'll take Charles' word for it...anyone want to tell him he is wrong, to his face....none of this internet hero BS...

I might actually do that. Our daughters play soccer against each other, and he's not getting around very well these days. I can outrun him if needed.

I like that we have potentially improved every level of the defense, with the return of Lee at linebacker and addition of Jones in the secondary. It means nothing until we see how it all works and if we can stay healthy, but it'll be interesting to see if we go from having very few defensive standouts (Scandrick, T. Crawford, R. McClain) to seven or eight (Hardy, Gregory, maybe Lawrence, T. Crawford, Lee, R. McClain, Scandrick and Jones).

I really like what they've done on defense a lot. A whole lot. It will be a much better unit than what they had last year.

To try to predict a season though, is folly.

Tis the offseason. It's what you get when you go 12-4 the previous season.

If they hit on Lawrence, they did remarkably well retooling a DL without a lot of premium picks. Two seconds and two thirds for Lawrence, Gregory, Crawford, and then picking up Hardy in FA? They really had no business retooling one of the hardest position groups on an aging roster without multiple first round picks. I know I personally wanted the DL in each of the three OL drafts for that very reason. Looks like it worked out great for them (again, if Lawrence is as advertised and, of course, if the Hardy suspension is reduced to something reasonable).

Every person loosely associated with a team not in cleveland should have this attitude.

I've said it myself

Carr - Jones - Church (Wilcox) - Scandrick
Lee - McClain - Hitchens
Hardy (Gregory) - Crawford - McClain - Lawrence

That is actually a really good defense.

They did indeed do very well. Of course Gregory has yet to do one thing in the NFL and Lawrence has only done it for a few games... but I think most expect Gregory to be a good pass rusher and IMO, Lawrence showed nicely at the end of last year.

I feel like Lawrence will do well on the strong side. As I mentioned last year, he just has average speed for a weak side end but he is very quick and athletic for a strong side end. The question there would be: Can he hold up against the run? Clearly Marinelli and Garrett feel like he can, so that is good. His run defense did appear very solid for the most part.

Lawrence has the potential to be a very good SDE, IMO. We know Marinelli is going to have a liberal rotation on the line and to have a guy like Gardner or Russell playing on some of the run downs would do a lot to help Lawrence be fresh in the nickle and dime packages.

My point in all of that is to say that, while we don't know that Lawrence will be a star yet... we can at least tell that he isn't a bust and will, at worst, be a solid player.

Gregory is as natural a pass rusher as I've seen in a long, long time. The guy just has what it takes to get to the QB. I will be surprised if he isn't at least providing good pressure from the nickle.

Hardy... well, he's a beast. The only questions with him are: When will he be available and how many snaps will he take inside at DT?

In the nickle:

Carr - Jones - Church - Scandrick - Patmon
Lee - Hitchens
Gregory - Hardy - Crawford - Lawrence

That would provide good coverage with an excellent pass rush.

So much for Marinelli to work with his season. I can't wait to see how he will use them all.
