As stated in other threads, they blew this one, big time. But to their credit, they also hit on a quite a few mid-low rounders. Brugler tweeted that they passed on Watt coz he wasn't a good fit? Lesson learned....just draft the best damn player, the rest will take care of itself.

Fans in misery don’t care. Easier to complain about one guy than it is about the other 40 we got right lol. Great job McClay.

Yeah McClay has been outstanding. But the very best thing he has done for this team, was getting JJ to control him impulses and let the football guys pick football players.

    That's right. I don't care.

Their other successes don't make this epic failure magically disappear.

In the big picture the Cowboys have drafted more good players than they will be able to sign to second contracts. So missing out on Taco isn't the worst thing in the world.

"This led Dallas to decide between Watt and Charlton — which created a divide between scouts and coaches leading up to the draft. Some scouts liked Watt more than Charlton because he showed more juice and bend as a pass rusher, while McClay and the coaches favored Charlton’s length and value as a run defender. In fact, the war room concluded Watt was the better overall player, but that Charlton was the better overall fit. Thus, the Cowboys turned the card in for the Michigan defensive end."

In the bigger picture, the Cowboys continue to have one of the worst RDE situations in the league, and a defensive line that continues to underachiever, disappoint, and get them bounced out of the playoffs.

I don’t know that he missed on talent. He missed on attitude.

The most disappointing thing is they jumped their own board, which is something McClay says he believes is a cardinal sin.

They do a very good job scouting out the talent. Just look at the players they bring in to visit each year. Not a lot of bad players in retrospect. But this was a mistake and hopefully it taught him a lesson.

That can still be spotted during workouts and interviews.

I’d rather see a chart of the successes.

It’s a shame. Not saying he would have been a big time player but his preseason this year showed that he looks improved but there was no way they were letting him play because of his attitude. We generally give players every chance when we draft them (Rico). He must have done something bad bad.

Agree about best player. Jeff Cavanaugh tweeted the same thing yesterday. Dallas was looking for a DT this year. Now, we don't know if Trysten Hill is going to be a bust. They very well may have reached again. We see teams do it all the time. Look at the 2017 draft. Bears NEEDED a QB and took Trubisky at #2. They could have had almost anyone else, including Mahomes or Watson, but thought Trubisky was the best fit.

Exactly.......for them to give up on him ( a 1st rounder ) after only TWO years, it had to be pretty bad. Like uncoachable bad..

Just watching Taco play, I always questioned him having first round talent. I couldn’t believe the guy wasn’t touted as a 1st round DE. It was easy to see he lacked explosiveness.

Just wondering if it was something to the FO or staff.

No one outside the Cowboys FO knows for sure whose voice ultimately pushed through the pick, but if anyone cares to remember, it was stated at the time of his selection that Taco was a “project.”

I realize he was a late-round choice (#28 overall), but who the heck uses a first-round pick on a project player?
