Is Cowboys' right tackle competition already over?

Todd Archer
ESPN

If the Cowboys were going to make this a competition they would have Green taking some snaps with the first team at tackle. He is on a Tuesday-Thursday workout plan because of back surgery last season, but he’s not taking first-team snaps there yet either.

Green might take some work at guard with the first team because the Cowboys are looking at Jonathan Cooper exclusively at center at the moment. They want to give Cooper as much work at that position now to get him familiar with the spot. Knowing what we know right now, I believe Cooper will be the opening day left guard. The Cowboys have used Emmett Cleary and Joe Looney with the first group at left guard, but they want to get Cooper as much center experience as possible.

If he can't make himself available on a regular basis, that's not out of the question. He can't help the team as a spectator.

I agree unfortunately there is only so much a player can do about injuries. Ask Sean Lee. I don't think Lee is brittle or made of glass I think he has ran into come bad breaks in terms of injury. Over the last couple of years he has avoided missing a lot of games. Green has had injury issue but hopefully he can get past them

As I recall Chaz Green has not had one single season in college or the pros where he has not missed games due to injury. So WHY anyone would think things suddenly change this year is a mystery.

I think it could work. I'm not sold on Cooper

after watching Cooper tape last year with Cleveland I questioned if he would even make 53 with Cowboys this year. Now I am starting to think the started LG isn't on the roster yet. Cleary is a backup. I thought Bell has best chance at LG but we are hearing very little about him there.

Joe Looney is also in the mix at Guard but has been banged up this week. Even if we don't counton Green to be healthy enough to start, we may be trying to see if he can be the swing tackle and swing guard.

I'm not surprised at this. With Dallas seemingly now committed to giving Collins every rep it can to see if he can play right tackle, the question becomes who will be the left guard if Collins shows he can handle the RT spot.

If Green ends up being our fifth-best lineman, then it wouldn't be smart not to have him ready to be the starting left guard.

that's how I see this. Green could be very valuable as back-up swing guard/tackle. He basically could play 4 positions if he can pull this off. I thought he played well last pre-season at LT. I don't see Green as starter because he isn't reliable enough for that but could give Dallas considerable flexibility as backup everywhere except Center.

Honestly...I find this disturbing. Where in the hell is Jonathan Cooper? And why isn't he getting reps? You would think if your counting on a guy to be your starter..you would be getting him some time w/ the starters.

Well, if he's the best one, then he should start until he can't. If we get four starts out of him then have to go with Cooper or Bell, at least we had our top five on the field for four games.

Based on his play at tackle, Green might end up being the best of the bunch. I feel fairly good about Bell at guard as well, but not at tackle. I'm not sure about Cooper just because I don't think he's ever gotten his flexibility back since his injury. Movement skills are the strength of his game, but if he's developed more power over the years, he might be able to overcome any movement loss.

They are probably rotating them to give them all time with the starters. I don't think it is clear-cut who will be the starter, so they've got to give each of the contenders time.

Think he played every ol position at Florida and was their best lineman at any point he lined up no matter where.

When he was healthy :)
That's right. My recollection is he looked really good at LG at Florida. But it's been a while since watching those games.

I'm thinking that's the case also. We're about to see if Green is able to overcome his injury issues or not very shortly. I fully realize that all players can't control what happens in terms of the unexpected injuries that happen without warning. Still, Green is subject to the decisions of the staff as to whether they'll decide to keep him or send him packing. He'll be obliged to convince them that he's worthy of keeping around either as a starter or backup. Either one requires being available, first and foremost.

I think he really needs desperately to establish himself quite convincingly if he expects to remain on the team. Others, like Sean Lee have had injuries and returned to show that they can play extremely well and do so long enough to convincingly establish their worth. I would only hope Green is able to do the same before it's too late to convince the staff to keep him upon weighing the pros and cons.

agreed. Initially I thought Dallas stole one when they got Cooper then I went back to watch his games last year with Cleveland and couldn't figure out why he was still in NFL. That injury did a number on him. Maybe Dallas can trade linebacker since they look deep there for OG.
