FRISCO
Dallas Cowboys swing tackle Chaz Green has been diagnosed with a herniated disc in his back, but is going to try and play through it down the stretch.

Green practiced on a limited basis Wednesday and is hoping to progress throughout the week. He is still hoping to be an option for the Cowboys at some point this season.

“It’s something I’m trying to work through,” Green said. “Given the time of the season, obviously it needs time but I don’t have that, so just trying to see if it’s something I can work through.”

Green opened the season as the swing tackle and started two games at left tackle with Tyron Smith sidelined with a back injury. Green started a Week 3 game against Chicago and again in Week 4 at San Francisco, a game in which he injured his foot.

The foot has fully healed for Green, but the back injury is what’s slowed him of late. Green acknowledged that he may have to undergo back surgery in the offseason.

“I’m not trying to think like that,” Green said. “I mean, it’s a possibility, but I’m not thinking like that. I’m just trying to stay positive, try to make sure I can calm it down and see if I can work through it.”

This Is what I was worried about when we drafted him. I liked him talent wise, and he played well for us this year, but he has always had injury issues. Have to bring back Free next year at least as a backup for injury insurance.

Can't see that he will be able to play with a herniated disk, especially as a lineman. Wonder where in the back his issue is.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Just shut him down. He is a player that has already shown he cannot play through injuries to begin with.

Start anew in the spring. Pretend he can actually stay healthy.

I think just about every lineman in the NFL has some degree of herniation in their discs. The nature of high impact NFL line collisions. It's just a matter of if and how much it impinges on the nerves.

Chaz Green in college:

1st year - red shirted
2nd year - missed last 5 games with ankle injury
3rd year - missed 3 games
4th year - missed entire year
5th year - started 11 games

In other words this player has difficulty staying on field. I also question his threshold to play thru pain.

he also has dreaded "short arms". Costa where have you gone.

Geez, should have put him on IR and kept Jackson!
Yes maybe, but I'm scared to see what happens if the OT Cleary has to play. He was a player that not other team wanted.

At least Green performed well in starts at LT this season.

I was mildly encouraged this morning to see he was returning to practice but evidently, he still has issues to get over before he'll be able to contribute actively in a game. His ongoing problems with injury aren't encouraging at all. The team had better tend to getting OT help in the draft or vet FA if they are serious about replacing Free with someone better. Time is getting more crucial every week now. It looks like Free will be it for the remainder of this season, judging by the looks of things. Here's hoping he's able to remain serviceable in the meantime.

I would go Free left tackle, Leary and Collins at guard and Martin at RT. I realize that's a lot of shuffling around, but probably our best 5.

Crazy how a single player can cause so much havoc.
