Chicago Bears place franchise tag on WR Alshon Jeffery

With a $155.27 million salary cap, the franchise tag for wide receivers is worth $14.599 million, which would be Jeffery’s 2016 salary if he signs the tender. The two sides have until July 15 to continue working towards a long-term contract, otherwise Jeffery would be on the one-year tag.
At the NFL Scouting Combine, Ryan Pace said the Bears were “aggressively” negotiating with Jeffery, and despite a Friday report that the team had decided to use the tag, the two sides were still talking.
By using the tag, the Bears prevent Jeffery from hitting the open market, where he would have been far-and-away the top receiver available. The 26-year-old had 54 catches for 807 yards and four touchdowns in an injury shortened season. He missed the entire preseason because of a calf injury, then groin and hamstring injuries kept him out of seven contests...
