Chip Kelly admits he's concerned about the Eagles' $42 million free agent making it through the season

Chip Kelly told SI's Peter King that it is something he's concerned about, and is limiting Murray's action consequently:

"I think there is a lot of validity to it. But how do you manage him going into a season? Our plan all along was to get another running back with him. I wanted to have two running backs, and that’s why we got Ryan [Mathews]. I don’t think you can have a guy carry it 370 to 400 times per season and be successful. We’re going to run it a lot—we always do—but we’ll have more than one guy doing it."

And the Eagles are indeed exercising caution with Murray...

Murray has only averaged playing 1 more game per season (13) than McFadden (12) and that was before the 392 carries which has historically been the demise of most RBs with that type of workload.

I think Kelly might be a very good coach. I think Kelly might be a very bad personnel guy. The later will make the former matter not all that much if that's the case.

I do like Kelly as a coach. You have to look at what he's done this offseason and just scratch your head, though. He's way out on a limb.

Makes sense. You sign a RB to a $40+ million deal coming off a season where he got a huge workload and then you only play him 15 snaps a game. Seems like a good investment. :lmao2:

And... And.... And...... Your plan all along was to pair him up with another back.... Lol

Yeah right!

If he is honest he overpaid for Murray to take him away from cowboys... Why else would you pay for those tires with that much tread missing?

I wonder if he's too stuck in the college coaches mind set. My players have a limited time I have them and I can always replace them with recruiting. But the problem he is is that in the NFL the players frequently survive coaching changes if they have enough talent. What really confuses me is the dismantling of their offensive line this year. They kept the tackles and ditched much of the interior talent while trading for a QB who is the definition of brittle. If it works he's going to look like a genius. If it fails he's probably destined for college again.

I don't get this take on their durability.

McFadden has missed six games the past two years while starting 19 total. Murray has missed two games the past two years while starting 30.

The two years prior to that, McFadden missed 13 total games, while Murray missed 9.

Maybe the fact that McFadden played in 13, 12 and 13 his first three seasons (with 5, 7 and 13 starts) makes the averages close, but Murray easily has been a more durable player than McFadden the past four years with a heavier workload.

Other than the head scratcher that others have pointed out that you gave a huge contract to a player who you have to baby....the obvious communication problem between Chip and Murray has to be concerning to Eagles fans. How does he not tell the RB why he is being held out of practices? lol.

Sean Lee is playing on a $42m deal and the Cowboys certainly look like they are doing things to protect him.

Eagles signed Ryan Matthews and they'd be stupid not to use him not to mention Sproles.

My best guess is that he's never been happy with the culture there the first two years, and that it took him time to oust his competition. Now he's trying to clear out the personalities in the locker room in one fell swoop, replace them, and move forward with a team of his own. It explains weird moves like cutting Mathis. Trading away McCoy is one of those, too, though I also think McCoy is nowhere hear the player he was two years ago. The Bradford deal was weird, though, and I don't believe Foles was a problem in the clubhouse. Same with the Murray signing. He brought in two backs who might start, and now he seems to be getting off on the wrong foot with Demarco with the confusion around the hold outs. Then you have players getting chairs on the sidelines and such, it just sounds like they have a culture problem.

Kelly is on record saying he wants to manage his roster like a college roster, with a rotation of players and looking at incoming classes three years before you intend to rely on them and such. Who knows how it works out for him. If he doesn't put together a decent season or two here, he might not get to find out.

Oddly the average for McFadden's 1st three years is the same as his last 3 years in terms of games played.

I think McFadden was a mistaken attempt by Jerry to get something for cheap. Now that McFadden is already having injury issues, that mistake is being exposed early-on. It's likely just a matter of time before it gets exposed even more. A move for another RB is just around the corner, imho. We'll see in due time.

He's making moves like a gambler that's playing with house money, that's willing to walk away from the table with not a care in the world if his sitting ends up a complete bust.
