New QB coach says Eli's ready for big year

ALBANY -- Tom Coughlin acknowledged that the best way for a team to come into training camp is without fanfare or high expectations. But he didn't let his quarterbacks coach in on that philosophy.

Chris Palmer is a former NFL head coach and has worked with Drew Bledsoe and Mark Brunell, who were elite quarterbacks in their prime, and Tony Romo. In the six months he's worked with Eli Manning, he says he's seen enough to know that his newest student can be one of the good ones.

"He's ready to have a big year," Palmer said of Manning. "I think our team is ready for a big year."

For that to happen, Manning has to have picked up much of what he and Palmer worked on through the spring.

When they first sat down to talk, Palmer said Manning had a list of six areas of his game he wanted to improve upon in his fourth NFL season, and Palmer had a few ideas as well.

Palmer would admit to only one on Manning's list: throwing better while moving to his left. "All right-handed quarterbacks want to get better at that," Palmer said.

Many people with and around the Giants want to see better body language from Manning and more responsiveness. Palmer saw it within the first couple of days of watching game film with his quarterback - lots and lots of game film.

"We spent 13 hours watching film, and it was very tedious. 'Why did you do this?' and 'What did you see here?' " Palmer said. "That's a grueling experience and I thought he learned from it. The things we talked about early in the film session, he carried out to the field and had great carryover."

Manning also will have to excel behind a reconfigured line and without Tiki Barber. Palmer can see that happening quite easily.

"A quarterback's like a good spaghetti sauce. He can cover up those noodles when they're not real good," he said. "I think a quarterback has to make plays and make guys better. If you look at Eli when he's playing very, very well, he's done an excellent job in that area."

Notes & quotes: CB Aaron Ross, the Giants' first-round pick, signed a five-year contract with $8 million guaranteed yesterday morning. WR Steve Smith, the second-round pick, agreed to terms Wednesday night but still has not finalized his deal, though he is likely to report with the rest of the team today ... Coughlin said he expects DE Michael Strahan to arrive today. Strahan has been rumored to be contemplating a holdout because the 35-year-old wants more than the $4 million he's due this season and next.

What's he supposed to say?

"Eli is going to have another mediocre season."

I've been reading a lot of Footballoutsiders.com's work and the more I read it the more I see how woefully inaccurate Eli is. His completion % was somewhat low as is, but it also doesn't take into account the Giants led the league in screen passes last year....easy passes to complete, so when he throws passes over 6 yards long his accuracy is pretty bad. Also when FO.com did a study of the type of incompletions NFL QB's threw last year (bat downs on the line, underthrows, overthrows, etc) Eli was one of the worst in just about every category. http://www.footballoutsiders.com/2007/07/25/ramblings/stat-analysis/5263/

Eli was supposed to be accurate last year after working hard in the offseason and with his old college coach David Cutcliffe. But his small increase in completion % was due to the Giants propensity to throw screen passes. Now that they don't have Tiki around anymore, it doesn't look good for Eli

Considering that a qb is much more malleable emotionally than most quarterbacks as well as ourselves would like to think, I would say that if Chris Palmer DIDN'T say that Manning is ready for a big year he should just be fired on the spot. Why would Palmer say anything different?

Besides that, I think Eli Manning better understand that if this team has any chance of winning it is going to be with his arm. If you think the Cowboys need Romo to play well for us to win mulitply that tenfold for the G-boys upstate. Manning looks thick-headed but I think he gets it. Terrible defense, a much weaker running game, and an average team to work with.

Manning is talented; heck when he was doing the right things with his mechanics last offseason and those first four games when he practiced them, he was playing pretty well. Him getting hot is pretty much the only thing I would "fear" about that Giants team.

Considering Chris Palmer's recent work with quarterbacks.
Tim Couch-Cleveland-Immediately changes his throwing motion even though he was taken #1 overall by the expansion Cleveland Browns.
David Carr-Immediately changes his throwing motion even though he was taken #1 overall by the expansion Houston Texans.
Drew Bledsoe-He really blossomed last year under Chris's direction and was replaced by Romo early in the season.
Now Eli Manning...
Chris Palmer is the grim reaper of qb's. The kiss of death. Where ever he goes qb's melt into oblivion.
I wish he was back on the Cleveland coaching staff as qb coach but if he can't be there, then a division rival will do.

What he said is no different than what Brian Stewart said about Dallas defense... I mean just about everyone has high hopes around this time of year in the NFL....

I like Dallas chances of having a great defense more so than Eli have a great year at QB though...

He no longer has Tiki to carry the load and for the D to concentrate on. His O line is even more suspect then last year. Does not sound like a promising situation to me.

Eli will always get the "could happen this year" just because of his name.

I still can't get over how Good San Diego has turned out on that trade.

I bet if you asked Romo who did more for him, it was Lee and not Palmer.

I think the G-Men NEED Eli to have a big year. The loss of Barber will not be easy to overcome.
