New QB coach says Eli's ready for big year

ALBANY -- Tom Coughlin acknowledged that the best way for a team to come into training camp is without fanfare or high expectations. But he didn't let his quarterbacks coach in on that philosophy.
Chris Palmer is a former NFL head coach and has worked with Drew Bledsoe and Mark Brunell, who were elite quarterbacks in their prime, and Tony Romo. In the six months he's worked with Eli Manning, he says he's seen enough to know that his newest student can be one of the good ones.
"He's ready to have a big year," Palmer said of Manning. "I think our team is ready for a big year."
For that to happen, Manning has to have picked up much of what he and Palmer worked on through the spring.
When they first sat down to talk, Palmer said Manning had a list of six areas of his game he wanted to improve upon in his fourth NFL season, and Palmer had a few ideas as well.
Palmer would admit to only one on Manning's list: throwing better while moving to his left. "All right-handed quarterbacks want to get better at that," Palmer said.
Many people with and around the Giants want to see better body language from Manning and more responsiveness. Palmer saw it within the first couple of days of watching game film with his quarterback - lots and lots of game film.
"We spent 13 hours watching film, and it was very tedious. 'Why did you do this?' and 'What did you see here?' " Palmer said. "That's a grueling experience and I thought he learned from it. The things we talked about early in the film session, he carried out to the field and had great carryover."
Manning also will have to excel behind a reconfigured line and without Tiki Barber. Palmer can see that happening quite easily.
"A quarterback's like a good spaghetti sauce. He can cover up those noodles when they're not real good," he said. "I think a quarterback has to make plays and make guys better. If you look at Eli when he's playing very, very well, he's done an excellent job in that area."
Notes & quotes: CB Aaron Ross, the Giants' first-round pick, signed a five-year contract with $8 million guaranteed yesterday morning. WR Steve Smith, the second-round pick, agreed to terms Wednesday night but still has not finalized his deal, though he is likely to report with the rest of the team today ... Coughlin said he expects DE Michael Strahan to arrive today. Strahan has been rumored to be contemplating a holdout because the 35-year-old wants more than the $4 million he's due this season and next.
