I don't know about the rest of you, but if I were in charge, I'd be using this bye week to take a good look at my team's performance over the first 5 weeks and take a good look at the current roster.
While the optimist (and Wade Phillips) would say that the team is close to being 5-0, the pessimist (and me!) would say they're just as close to being 1-4.
And in looking at the team, I see one area that is underachieving and could use a 'push', Flozell Adams at left tackle. It looks obvious to me that Father Time is starting to catch up to him and he's resorting to whatever tricks he can to hold on.
His play last week against Kansas City was awful. And that was against one of the league's weaker pass-rushing units. I shudder to think of what an elite pass-rusher would have done to him last Sunday. It looks like he's jumping and sprinting outside to do whatever he can to prevent players running around him and in doing that, he's leaving a large gap for quick, inside penetration.
This is to say nothing of his routine sloppy plays where he's false-starting each week, often short-circuiting potential scoring drives.
Any way you slice it, I think he looks to be struggling out there and I'd like to look at another option, since this team still seems reluctant to trust Doug Free in any way.
Former Bengals LT Levi Jones is still on the market and is currently making the rounds and I feel Dallas should be his next destination. Jones may still have a high asking price, but last I checked, the Cowboys were sitting on a nice chunk of cap space, certainly enough for a nice one-year deal.
I think it's time this team start sending a message that mistakes and underachieving play will no longer be tolerated. I think even taking a look at Jones would send that message, but signing him would give the team a legitimate, experienced option.
Resolve the roster situation between Procter and Duke Preston one way or another. If the team is dumb enough to think that Procter can play, so be it. Just decide already. I don't even much care at this point. I'd do what I could to get Preston on special teams if that's what makes the difference but that's just me. I just think that roster space can be better utilized in this way.
No matter how you slice it, I think the left tackle position needs to be addressed, now and during next year's draft. For too long the team has ignored it and put up with Adams inconsistancies - no more I say.
And this isn't simply a Flozell Adams bash-fest. The guy does plenty of good things as well. It's more about options, motivation, and cleaning up mistakes. Despite many good plays, I think Adams is the poster-boy for this team's sloppy play.
I'd send a message that that's going to change and I think a signing like this one would resonate within the team that nobody is untouchable, irreplaceable, or beyond reproach.
