He said he talked to ppl close to Ware and his agent and said "they believe there will be suitors if he were to be cut."

Saw on NFLN.

If we cut him is it necessary to designate him as a June 1st cut or do we have room to straight out cut him?

We can do either. Cutting him now saves about $7M this year on the cap and nothing in 2015. Making him a June 1st cut saves the Cowboys $12M on the cap this year but has a charge for 2015.

From his point of view he can hit the open market and get more than the Cowboys offered.

He has them over a barrel.

But, he also needs to be at top form and will be physically vetted by all teams that court him.

True. But I think there is a bit of ugliness that started a few weeks ago when Jones suggested he had barely been on the field the last two years. There was no reason for that. He might just be willing to take less on the open market than stay for the same kind of money.

Oh boy, freeing up money to sign a 30-year old one year wonder in Hatcher with no edge rushers on the roster. That sounds like a great idea.

Surely nothing could go wrong with that.

Ware was MIA practically the whole year and Hatcher did fine. Who's to say Ware can ever be the same? Maybe Ware's career is nearing the end and he is nothing more than a situational pass rusher who also happens to be injury prone.

IMO we are at a crossroads, either we resign a aging player, or use the money to rebuild the defense long term. I hope we do the latter for a change. Thank you DW for many great years, I wish you success in a 3-4 somewhere as it might extend your career.

He had one year washed out due to injury. Take a look at Hatcher's comparative injury history and think about that tradeoff again.

Personally, I wouldn't sign Hatcher, unless the numbers were right, which I doubt they will be. If he was a few years younger, I would bring him back in a second. He was clearly meant to play in a 4-3. I also mentioned Melton, but that would depend on his health. The main point was, even thought it would hurt losing Ware, it would free up a good chunk of change to bring in a player or 2.

All in all, I get asking him for a paycut or cut outright to sign other free agents, preferably young ones. It makes sense.

But if the idea is to free up money just to keep Hatcher, my question is why.

Call his bluff. He can't get more than what the cowboys are wiling to pay him this season.

Well, we do not know how much of a cut they are asking for. If it is at or below his base the last few years, why should he?

2 years straight, not 1. He had about 4 sacks during weeks 9-17 in 2012, all because of injury.

Then adjust Ware's money, toss in Romo and trade for the first over-all pick with Houston. Toss in a third to make it sweet and have two first round picks.

He needs a new agent if he thinks he's gettting 7 or 8 million on the open market. Unless Jerry is low balling the offer.....

I just don't think we can take that $8 million cap hit from cutting him though. That would be $15 million in dead money we are paying for 2 d lineman to play against us while our own line still stinks. Jerry has to figure something out soon
