Got this off the Ranch Report MB. Apparently, nothing but sloppy journalism by Mac Engel. Too bad the mainstream media ran away with Mac's story. Thank You, Mac.

I wanted to take up for Wade Phillips speech because Engel was there and cant even get the story correct. Here is what happened, Wade Phillips was introduced and was walking to the podium while he was there was a gentleman up front yelling over and over GET YOUR RING FINGER READY! GET YOUR RING FINGER READY! he yelled it at least 10 times. Wade looked at the table and then went on speaking, toward the end of the speech the guy starts yelling it again GET YOUR RING FINGER READY! Wade Phillips gets a smirk on his face and says yes get your ring finger ready. Bad reporting starts a lot of crap, now I wonder about all of the things I have read through the years was blown out of proportion.

I was sitting next to the table that was yelling GET YOUR RING FINGER READY! Now I wonder how many things reported are not true!

So Wade said the words 'get your ring finger ready'.

So where's the sloppy journalism?

Just because he said it after someone else said it 10 times doesn't mean Wade didn't say it.

Matt Mosley and other reporters were there as well and they all reported what they saw.

Wade Phillips standing there addressing a crowd and uttering the words 'get your ring finger ready'.

As a matter of fact this report makes Wade look like a bigger doofus.

He's an NFL head coach and he doesn't know that mimicking that guy's comment was a bad decision? Makes him sound like he's been around the game for about 10 minutes, not 30 years.

Print is print. Context is context. Wade shouldn't have uttered the phrase because he should have known it was going to be used in the media as a talking point no matter if people used the entire context of the situation or not.

Did he learn anything from his 'Mr. Fix It' comments from last season?

But it's not even that big of a deal either way. I don't think anyone sees Wade as a cocky or arrogant person so they already knew the comments were said in a 'tongue in cheek' manner.

Doesnt matter. Its irresponsible to print something out of context. Just because it has been the norm for some time doesnt mean its right.

If the phone rings and its for my friend.
Its his mother and I say

Now if I just tell my friend

If this was for the Coaches' clinic, I was there.

Wade pretty much said it to shut up the guy who kept yelling it. I really don't think he was being cocky or anything. The guy just kept interrupting him initially.

The coaches were great. Reggie Herring was crazy (in a good way - i've got a really good feeling about our LB corp next year). Someone asked Brian Stewart, "are we gonna beat the Commanders", and Stewart answered it in a very businessman-like way.

Jason Garrett was a really personable man. I'd really love to be coached by him.

Overall, our coaches seem prepared yet not cocky at all. They know of the expectations, and they are determined to succeed. That doesn't make them cocky.

So you wanted Engel to print the entire speech in his article?

Then also print the comments of everyone in the room surrounding Wade as he was talking.

That's not feasible.

He's probably suggesting the reporters report not only the remarks, but the context of the remarks when the context is highly relevant and changes the meaning of the text.

Yes, and Matt Mosely is some sort of great journalist. I mean Matt McBriar was supposed to be cut back in '05 because Mosely could read lips and told McBriar in the locker room he was about to be cut. That's not good journalism, that's Skip Bayless.

Wade Phillips standing there addressing a crowd and uttering the words 'get your ring finger ready'.

Um, no.

Wade was just trying to appease a fanatic so the fanatic would shut up. A true, professional journalist would have reported this. In fact, I knew when the comment was reported that it was probably blown way out of proportion with glaring facts missing from the report. I wasn't there, and I'm not Kreskin either, but when you see how the local Dallas media operates when it comes to the Cowboys you pretty much take anything they say with a grain of salt.

There's plenty of people that see that as an arrogant comment. Be it Cowboys haters or Cowboys diehard fans. You and I don't see it as an arrogant comment because we sort of understand the type of person Wade is and speaking for myself, I know how the Dallas sports media generally sucks. But most people tend to take the media's word for it.

Context sir, context. This is the difference between good reporting and hyperbole reporting. (or as referred to around here as BSPN) It is nothing more than an cheap sorry attempt to rile people into paying attention to what your saying. If you are going to report what was said, at least put it in the correct context. Don't act like Wade made some great proclamation when that in fact didn't happen.

It's classless and tasteless, but thats what we have come to expect from Mac Engel and BSPN. It's disappointing that you condone it.

What does it matter if he said it or not? We all are expecting great things this season, the fans, Jerry Jones and the rest of the cowboy nation. Many of us believe this is wades' last season as HC anyways, especially if we fall short in what is believed to be our best run at a superbowl yet.

"get your ring finger ready" goes right along with the expectations set by the media, the fans and especially Jerry Jones. Whether he said it or not, he better be thinking that way because if the Cowboys fail to make the playoffs, Wade, he better get his thumb ready because he may just have to hitchike out of Texas....

Thanks, you're the second person who has confirmed this.

I hope everyone reads this post.

Maybe we should email the Engels or, even better, their employer the FWST about how we feel about this.

But really, what the Engels said -- and a lot of reactions on these boards -- are just another case of having a gun to someone's head and just waiting for them to make a mistake. It's amazing to me.

Abso-flippin-lutely!

The good thing about this sensationistic reporting is... people are coming around... people now know to question things they hear or read....

The bad thing is... there are still many that read/hear it is as fact... and it drives them.

I hope Wade and the Cowboys turn this into a positive. Getcha popcorn ready. Getcha ring finger ready. Whatever. If the Cowboys win and keep winning, the Engels and the like can go straight to hell.
