2006 SENIOR BOWL REPORTS

by Colin Lindsay, GBN Editor and Jamie Moore, GBN Chief Scout

North Practice; Thursday morning, January 26...

"Penn State DE Tamba Hali, on the other hand, looks like a classic 'tweener, but he also looks like he could be a problem for pro OTs as he also explodes off the snap and comes up field so low…"
http://www.gbnreport.com/seniorbowlreport.htm

Early mocks have him going in the top-15. IF he's considered a classic 'tweener by the scouts, would he be a good pick w/our #1? Would he be able to play OLB in our 3-4? Anyone w/ insight about Hali's skills' an OLB?

I would worry about his speed listed at 4.8 and his agility for the OLB position.

I love Tamba but I see him as nothing but a 3rd down pass rush specialist in the pro's. He's to slow to be a LB and not big enough to hold up against the bigger OL for a whole game in the NFL.

I wonder if Darryl Tapp could play OLB - that guy had 10 sacks and 35 freaking QB pressures. He's 6'1 256.

Yeah Tapp's stock has dropped alot but I like him somewhat. Hes undersize for a DE so moving him to OLB in a 3-4 scheme would be a great idea. Monster stats on him this past year thats for sure...

How fast is Tapp? Anyone have an idea on his 40 time?

I'm a PSU fan and I don't want Tamba- fear the bust factor- reminds me a LOT of Calvin Pace.

Darryl Tapp Height: 6-1 | Weight: 265 | 40-Time: 4.80
darryltapp.jpg

Official Bio

three.gif
Strengths:
Very productive pass rusher at the college level...Shows great strength...Intense and has a motor that never stops...Instinctive and flows to the ball...Technically sound and knows how to use leverage to his advantage...Has a great burst and really closes well...Does a good job of adjusting in space...A team leader and hard worker with top intangibles...A playmaker who is always around the action.

Weaknesses:
Lacks ideal size in terms of height...Speed, quickness and natural athleticism are only average...Doesn't do a great job versus the run...Can be overwhelmed by larger offensive linemen...Needs to hit the weights and get stronger...Must develop a wider array of pass rush moves for the next level...Could be a classic case of a top college player whose game doesn't translate well to the pros.

Notes:
The type of player who doesn't have the measurables you look for but just makes plays once the whistle blows...Could be a controversial prospect who doesn't go nearly as high as his college press clippings would lead you to believe...You never want to underestimate someone with this guy's fire and positive attitude.

Seems a little slow to play OLB. We might be better off just taking Lawson at 18 if he is there.

I don't know why but everything I've read about him reminds me of potentially another Kevin Greene. They seem to be the same type athletically. IF that were the case, would you consider taking Tamba? Greene was a pretty darn good OLB in the 3-4. I'd like for Tuna to bring Tamba in for a workout later on....

Current mocks have Tamba as a Top-15 pick. Is this just a lot of hype for a Joe Pa player?

No, there is no way that's the case. I go to Penn State and saw every game Tamba played in the last two years. The guy is just a beast. He's not that fast, but he is one of the quickest lineman I have seen in college. He just straight up explodes off the snap and has one of the best motors I've seen as well. The guy is relentless. The only time he'll slow down even a little is if he's exhuasted...which i didn't see too much of the past two years anyway. As for us taking a shot at him, I doubt it. He's a DE, his coverage skills would be severly lacking, as I don't think I've seen him drop back and cover once since he's been here. He just doesn't have that ability in his game. I'm sure he could learn, but it would be a wasted pick for us I think. He's just not built for the 3-4.

If you have watched any of his games, you'd know that lightning fast off the line of scrimmage and he has excellent closing speed, which is really all that matters. Even as a 3-4 OLB, it's not terribly important that he be able to cover a TE more than 20 yards downfield, because he'll almost always have help from the safeties.

I personally think that Hali would be at his best in 3-4 defense.

What about his agility and change of direction. Do you remember when Fujita when he was shaken out of his shorts by a RB, left him standing there?

As long as he's quick enough not to let that happen, I'm with it.

Hope you're right about Hali cuz he would give us more options in the first two rounds of the draft!
