Cleveland vs 49ers

I swear...Talk about having a lucky horseshoe...Before the year everybody was thinking, including the 49ers, that SF was going to be making a run at the playoffs this year. So, they go for it and trade their 1st round pick in this years draft to the Patriots, of all people, so they can draft an o lineman. Dallas, on the other hand, makes what I thought was a great trade, with a Cleveland team that everyone thought would be picking in the top 5 again. Look how things have changed. The Patriots lose their first round pick because of spy gate, but never fear, they have the 49ers pick which looks to be at least top 5. However, Cleveland decides to play some football and should make the playoffs where we will be picking in the 20's. Who would have thunk it? Only reason I brought this up is that they were talking about Cleveland winning 11 games this year on NFL Network this morning.

Jerry made a bet because he thought they could still get the guy they wanted (Spencer). The bet didn't pay off as well as he hoped but, based upon Quinn's work so far, it hasn't paid off for Cleveland either. We'll see how it turns out.

We got the guy we wanted (for good or bad) and still have an extra 1st round pick which should give us a shot at a quality player, just not a blue-chipper like we hoped. Still, it is a very good deal for us.

Not everyone. I never bought that the 49ers were going to over night transform into some kind of juggernaut because they went out and spent a bunch of money on players. The Commanders have taken that approach before, and it didn't do too much for them.

I also wasn't as optimistic that we'd end up with a top 5 pick from Cleveland like most people thought. I thought maybe 13-17th pick, when it might now end up being mid to late 20's.

If any team wants to go from a stinker to a winner overnight, just give us your first round pick. You're guranteed a playoff birth the next season.

so what.

You think having two first rounders is a bad thing? Just because it isnt a top 5 pick doesnt mean the two 1's have no value now.

Draft day is going to be a great day.

I never expected a top 5 pick from the Cleveland Browns...

Looking back its funny how those who watched the Browns last year and were familiar with there roster were projecting a pick between 10-15 and those who were not so familiar were expecting the number one pick.

Unfortunately for boys fans neither group was right and it looks to be between 20-25.

That is my opinion. There is nothing wrong with going into a draft with two first round picks. It gives you options.

Why would anyone want a top 5 pick?

Winning teams aren't built at the top end of the draft unless Peyton Manning is there and there is no Peyton Manning in this year's draft.

Looking at the best teams in the NFL this year, the Patriots, the Colts, the Packers and the Cowboys, you'll see that Manning's the only real difference maker taken at the top of the draft. Yea, Hawk was a top pick but he's not exactly an All Pro although he is having a nice season, Newman's helping the Cowboys but I can't see their record being much worse if he wasn't there, Seymour's missed more games than he's played so calling him the reason for NE's success would be silly.

We've seen very little movement at the top end of the draft in recent years thanks to the price. Teams have been begging to move down without any takers. The value is outside the top 5. Ware is a perfect example. His production is a great value but if he turned out to be a bust, and plenty of players taken around his slot end up busting, his cap hit wouldn't have crippled the franchise for years like those taken in the top 5.

Dallas is going to have its own pick in the 27-31 range (worst case scenario draft position wise Indy and GB pass Dallas for a better record and the Super Bowl is two teams with a worse record than Dallas) and a pick from Cleveland in the 17-23 range or pick 30 or 31. I'd take those two picks over a top 5 any day. Yes, it would have been great if Cleveland's pick was in the 8-13 range but that's water under the bridge.

I never said is was a bad thing I don't believe. Just ironic how the Patriots have this high pick now, that's all.

Great post and excellent points. I totally agree.

Like many have said this week, hos, theo, cl, we can use these 3 picks in the top 55-60 players this year to make sure this team is competitive for years.

We dont have to reach at any position, we are not relying on the draft for any one position like years past.

I firmly believe wherever the two picks end up we should just stay put and take the best available players, regardless of position. Even quarterback.

Maybe that is ironic. I don't think so because they make trades every year to provide themselves with multiple picks in the first two rounds. Eventually those good moves will end up rewarding them with a very high pick. I think Dallas is positioning themselves in the same manner. It did not end up being a high pick for the next draft, but they have options to trade which can possibly lead to a high draft pick in future drafts.

We have two first round picks in 2008 and I'm happy with that. Sure, if Browns' pick was in top-15, it would be even better, but again, I'm happy with two first round picks.

One thing that I think has been overlooked is that there is always the possibilty of Jerry trading down again from Cleveland's pick and picking up another first rounder next year and hopefully we'll be a little luckier in where that pick ends up.

I personally don't think it will happen but you never know.

Here's an interesting question. Do you root for or against the Browns in the playoffs?
