How in the world can the head coach not know that his defense was battered, and was down to 3 rookies in the secondary? So yes he is responsible for allowing the Lions to go 80 yards in less than a minute. Only an idiot would put the game in the hands of a battered defense to win it.

So yes this game falls squarely on the shoulders of the idiot head coach!

The way the final drive was going to end, it was going to fall on our defense anyway.

Not many will buy that.......but it's the truth.

Nobody's buying because It's not the truth. Garrett assisted in a big way giving up 80 yards by letting that series exist with 1:07 on the clock.

On third down, out of field goal and first down range, you kneel it and run the play clock down to 27 secs and punt it inside the 10 yard line. The kneel seals the deal eliminating possibility of penalty or turnover.

as soon as Johnson hit the turf and the ref signaled to run the clock at the spot, a timeout should have been called. In fact, a TO might have been in order after Durham's grab despite the fact he went OB to get the team right if nothing else.

I can't believe how dense some of our fans are.

If Smith doesn't commit the hold, we win. PERIOD. END OF DISCUSSION.

Clock-management was fine.

A clock management coach. I wonder how that would work out.

A clock management coach on one side, and a motivation coach on the other. Maybe we can sandwich a situational-football coach in there somewhere. ;)

My 2 cents is that we should have taken a knee or just run it up the middle. No questions asked. If we would have taken the knee or run it up the middle where the play was designed to be there would have been no holding call. Garrett putting it in the hands of a rookie running back was a dumb move. He should have stated run the ball the way the play is designed. Better to keep it safe than sorry. Now we are sorry we lost because of it.

I think the design was to move the ball forward, and I'm ok with that. Forward being North/South. Not sideways to go forward, or reversing field to go forward. I'd have been happier with a play call that sent Romo in a dead sprint towards the opposite 35 yard line into a slide than someone NOT telling Randle to go down if there's no hole immediately.

It wasn't just that play. On the previous series Dallas slammed the ball into to line on 1st and 2nd down and then threw the ball on third. It was incomplete and saved DET a timeout. You either commit to running out the clock or you play you're normal offense and try to get first downs. Trying to do both proved fatal.

middle screen was in order on that third down absolutely. something safe and easily caught with a chance at 1st down yardage but the clock must keep moving following the epic fails of 1st and 2nd downs.

Hindsight's awesome.

1) Garrett doesn't even call plays anymore and he's still getting blamed for playcalling.

2) What if Romo completes the 3rd down pass and we move the chains? Then Garrett's a genius. Oh, but that's not what happened... so I guess it's THE PLAYERS LITERALLY ON THE FIELD PLAYING THE GAME who decide the game after all.

3) I love how you lament that we "slammed the ball into the line" as if we had no intentions of gaining good chunks of yardage. What if we popped out 5 yards/carry on those 2 runs and we iced the game? Again, THE PLAYERS decide the game.

4) Our D got a stop on the ensuing Lions possession!!! So EVEN IF you wanted to lament the playcalling on that drive (as if you know the Cowboys playbook well-enough to know that we should have run a different play), you STILL couldn't make the argument that it cost us the game.

It didn't cost us the game. But its a situation that was crucial to the outcome of the game. Garrett didn't realize how crucial that 3rd down was. Good coaches do. They would call a time out and send in a play that will work. Garrett isn't being blamed for making a bad decision. I personally blame him for not realizing the importance of the play and just letting fate control our destiny. Jimmy would not have just leave it up to his QB during that situation. He would have called timeout and a play would be called to make sure we send in the best play possible.

So he should have burned one of our two remaining timeouts (as if there's no way THAT could come back to bite you)... because you're convinced that Jimmy Johnson would have done the same 20 years ago?

And not only that, but the mere fact that we didn't burn a timeout before the play... is enough to convince you that Garrett didn't realize how important the play was? Wow!

Those are some MIGHTY big leaps you're making.

We are leading. You might as well use those timeouts for something important like send in a play that will work.

I know Garrett didn't realize the importance of that play. If he did wouldn't you call time and talk it over with your QB? Thats when football knowledge or experience comes in handy. Unfortunately, I doubt that Garrett has that type of experience to know when to call timeout.

Jimmy called timeout many times during crucial moments. Parcells also when he was with the Giants. When was the last time Garrett sent in a play after a timeout? Stop the clock doesn't count.

Oh really? Let's see if you can cite 3 examples of Jimmy calling timeout late in the 4th quarter of a close game just to talk things over with Troy and while the Cowboys were ahead. Oh, and make sure you choose examples in which there was still a very real chance that Dallas could've ended up getting the ball back and needing that timeout which was burned.

"I know Garrett didn't realize the importance of that play. If he did wouldn't you call time and talk it over with your QB?"

You can rest assured knowing that Garrett has more football knowledge in his pinky than you do in your whole body. Pretty sure anyone with an elementary understanding of the sport knew it was a critical play.

You don't burn timeouts that might be crucial later just because you're ahead. It was only a 3-point game and it was still very possible that we'd end up needing to score on our last possession to win (which is exactly what happened). Yes, there were only 7 seconds left by the the time we got the ball, but there's nothing Garrett could do about that. We weren't in position to call timeout defensively to give us more time at the end.

There are lots of important plays in every football game but you only get 3 timeouts/half. Can't toss them down the drain anytime you hit a "crucial" play in the game.

Instead of a clock management coach (and motivational/situational coaches), why not just bring in a go for the jugular coach like Mike Martz. Call him QB/passing game coach if necessary. Martz is pass happy but he owns the best winning percentage in NFL history when he has a lead in the 4th quarter (93%). Or a guy like Al Saunders who believes in power running and down the field passing.

Both Martz and Saunders are Air Coryell disciples and have worked with Norv or Don Coryell directly. We need an OC that are experts in the current system, not to mention own a pair in crunch time.

So your saying that I made it up that Jimmy never called a timeout and inserted a play during a crucial situation? Your demands that I have cite you 3 examples are laughable.

I don't care if your defending Garrett and I really do hope he knows more than me regarding football. Heck his the headcoach of the Cowboys and he should.

But action speaks louder than words. Garrett has lost a lot of close games which most coaches would have never lost to. Do you remember him icing the kicker? How bout allowing that come from behind win by the Patriots? Or that out Detroit game which they miraculously came back from a 27-3 deficit. There are other instances worth mentioning as well.

In fact I can't even think of one instance we have won a close game because of a decision that Garrett has made during crunchtime. Certainly you can give me an example since you have high regards with his coaching ability. So please enlighten me about a few of Garrett's decisions that have won us games.
