Adams is playing on his rookie salary whether Dallas gives him an extension or not. Those years don't get erased with an extension. The only difference would be he would get his signing bonus up front. Only a portion of that, depending on the length of his contract, would go to his rookie years. But it wouldn't make much of a difference.

Exactly, let's say you did a 7yr/$85M or $90M deal with him with $45M up front because he is letting you get a discount with paying up front and early in Texas. You could spread that over 9 years with straight base salaries and instead of counting $3M this year he counts $8M and next year instead of $9M he counts $14M. Then he counts $11M each year for 7 years. What did you really change? Dallas wouldn't structure the deal that way anyway because it provides no future flexibility. That's why whenever these long contracts appear they are usually 3 yr deals with an out clause or you just keep the rest of the deal and you can always bonus out a year or two later if you need the cap space.
