With all the experts, naysayers, doubters, even fans thinking the Cowboys were in for an awful season in 2014, this great start may come as a huge shock.
If you were to talk to all of the front office people in the Dallas Cowboys organization, they might tell you a different story though. They might say that the Dallas Cowboys progress they have seen this year has been expected, as the moves they’ve made over the past few seasons has ultimately led to the team on the field today.
After releasing an all time great Cowboy in Demarcus Ware, along with pro bowlers Jay Ratliff and Jason Hatcher who were staples of defensive line for years, people figured this defense would be even worse than the third worst in NFL history of last season.
Not to mention the teams best defender in Sean Lee going down for the whole season on the first day of mini-camp with a torn ACL. Yeah, it looked that bad for the Cowboys.
But this defense has made due while signing a former pro bowler who went down for practically the whole season last year, Henry Melton from Chicago, and former first rounder and retiree, Rolando McClain, who has arguably the best defender on the team so far.
Health has also been a big thing. Besides the fact about Sean Lee, this team has stayed relatively healthy. Morris Claiborne went down for the year this past weekend with a torn patellar tendon, the former first round pick in 2012. But his injury might have been an blessing in disguise, unfortunately to say for Claiborne.
Claiborne’s struggles have been well documented and Sterling Moore and Orlando Scandrick have played great; well enough to compensate for the loss of their fellow corner for the year.
I think the biggest thing we should talk about is just how dominant this offense is and can continue to be.
Before this season, the Cowboys were consistently ranked close to the bottom in rushing attempts and yards. Now, they are the number one rushing team in the league through four weeks. Demarco Murray is on pace to beat Eric Dickersons’ record for most rushing yards in a season.
The offensive line that may be considered the best in all of football very soon has a lot to do with that. The young line consists of three first round picks who can provide consistent protection for Tony Romo and whoever succeeds him and pave the way for running backs like Murray for years to come...
