Pete Kendall, OG | New York Jets

6 of 10

An angry Kendall arrived at camp announcing his desire to be traded or released. He boycotted Eric Mangini's offseason program because he is unhappy with his contract. The offensive co-captain, signed through 2009, is seeking to increase his $1.7 million salary by around $1 million. The Jets are unlikely to budge because Kendall just renegotiated his contract last season and made $5.2 million in 2006.

Keep in mind when Ellis signed his contract, the cap wasn't nearly what it is currently..

So therefore, Ellis "deserves" more money?

Sorry.

But paying a 32 year old coming off an Achilles injury when he has never been that dominant more money doesn't seem like fiscal responsibility.

Exactly. If the Jets are going to refuse Kendall, who has been a very solid player for three straight seasons and is healthy, Dallas should be very cautious of compensating Ellis.

Nothing to be cautious of...

Because they won't be doing it.

Yeah, but Ellis thinks that enough media pressure will do the trick. I wonder if Kendall has tried that route with the New York media?

As the Stones would say, You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you find you get what you need.

Ellis would read that and would do a quick Jagger impression of, "I Can't Get No Satisfaction".

You people love putting words in people mouth. I didn't make an argument for or against him getting more money, I just stated the facts.

Apologies. Shouldn't have done that.

But my point still remains the same....I don't think its fiscally responsible to give a 32 year old coming off an Achilles injury more money, especially when he is already under contract anyway.

Ellis is doing what he needs to do to get more money. He realizes that he is entering his swan song and if he is ever going to get more money, he needs to do it pretty quick - either with us or another team. His timing isn't the best. Maybe he should have been quiet and came out and kicked butt. Then next off season start the chirping machine up again. But maybe he realizes he's lost a step or 4 and if he doesn't get his money now he never will.

I would find it hard to believe than any other team would be willing to pay much at this stage. He is 32 coming off a torn achilles and no one knows how he will come back from that injury. There is a chance that it will affect him a lot I hope that is not going to be the case but I really doubt anyone is going to pay out decent money

I realise everyone is going to shoehorn their personal biases into this statement, but don't you think that the part Ellis would pay attention to is where the Jets renegotiated his contract last year?

I mean, this is two different situations. The Cowboys won't renegotiate his current contract, while the Jets are refusing to renegotiate Kendall's contract for the second straight year.

If you're right, then Ellis is trying to re-negotiate his contract from a position of desperation. That's not a very sturdy foundation to base one's argument upon--regardless of whether it's with Dallas or any other team.
